"Susie"

The Tacky Dressed Girl

My wife Mary and I grabbed a bite to eat at an inexpensive buffet restaurant. A group of rambunctious teens rolled in, about 8 or 9 of them. One stood out. In my mind, I affectionately named the young lady, Susie.
Susie's associates were a bit brash and loud, dressed in jeans, t-shirts and tops. A few were particularly sloppy, obviously uncaring about their appearance. It was Sunday. Susie wore a dress and behaved more reserved than her friends. Her shoes and short dress broadcast bargain basement. She had big hair and wore far too much make-up. I suspect that Susie endures teasing from her friends for trying to be “all that”? It would be easy to poke fun at Susie's tacky appearance. And yet, I saw something in Susie. I thought, I bet this young lady is creative and bright.

While her attempt to stand out was awkward, clearly, Susie simply wanted to be special; doing it in the only way her finances and knowledge would allow. My heart went out to Susie. She probably has big hopes and dreams for her future. If mentored, I believe Susie could blossom into something wonderful. Her specialness shined through. I said a little prayer for Susie. I prayed that when God sends Susie's teacher, (I believe He always does) that Susie will be ready and listen. I prayed that Susie will separate herself from all those so-called friends who put her down, attempt to crush her dreams and try to keep her from thinking she is “all that”. I prayed that Susie will continue trying to be special because in the eyes of God, she truly is. Lloyd Marcus, Proud Unhyphenated American
