The Teflon “Blonde”: Hillary Clinton and Her Lies, Half-Truths, Obfuscations

In the 1980s mob boss John Gotti wrangled his way out of so many prosecutions that the media deemed him the Teflon Don. In light of her habitual habit of trafficking in lies, half-truths, obfuscations, and smirking off important questions about potential malfeasance, Hillary Clinton has rightly earned the sobriquet of The Teflon “Blonde.” (Blonde is in quotes for it has been reported that Clinton is, in fact, a natural brunette. To maintain her blonde mane, Clinton reportedly “spent $2,500, in just two months, with Isabelle Goetz, her long-time hairstylist.) It’s common knowledge today that Hillary Clinton has “a truth problem.” She has repeatedly scored dismal ratings on polls in regard to trust. Not surprisingly, beyond Donald Trump’s coinage of “Lyin’ Hillary,” she has garnered a host of other sobriquets that allude to her dishonesty and lack of trustworthiness: Shillary and HiLIARY are but two of them. And now there’s The Teflon “Blonde.”
One would be hard put to come up with the “Ten Most Blatant Lies” by Hillary Clinton, which is true due to the indisputable fact that she has committed so many more. Furthermore, Clinton is what you could call “an all purpose liar.” That is, she does not solely lie and/or utter half-truths about those situations in which she wishes to cover up a case of poor judgement or the truth of an accusation, but she also lies about the most inconsequential matters imaginable. And that is exactly why some have argued that Hillary Clinton is not only a habitual liar but also a pathological liar. The late New York Times journalist William Safire asserted that Hillary Clinton was “a congenital liar.” Many, if not most, people, it seems, are able to set aside the lies of their favorite candidates, possibly thinking, “Who hasn’t told a lie?” or assuming, “Everyone lies” or asking, “Who am I to throw stones at a glass house?” That said, one would think that citizens have a vested interest in electing a truly honest person to the highest office in the land, indeed, to one of the most, if not the most, powerful positions in the world. Despite the repeated accusations that Hillary Clinton doesn’t seem to know the truth from the proverbial hole in the ground, she is currently leading the polls in the current presidential election in the United States. In light of that, it is, if nothing else, of interest to note some of the “baggage” that she may enter the White House with: LIE: Hillary Claims She Never Received Any Classified Emails on the Server of Personal Computer: TRUTH: FBI Director James B. Comey said, “The FBI found 110 emails on Clinton's server that were classified at the time they were sent or received. That stands in direct contradiction to Clinton’s repeated insistence she never sent or received any classified emails. And it even stands in contrast to her amended statement that she never knowingly sent or received any classified information.” (Source, “Hillary Clinton’s Email Problems Might Be Even Worse Than We Thought” by Chris Cilliza in The Washington Post, July 5, 2016).

LIE: Hillary Claimed That All of her Grandparents Were Immigrants: “During a conversation on immigration reform, Hillary Clinton told a small audience in Norwalk, Iowa….that ‘all my grandparents, you know, came over here.’” TRUTH: Only one of Hillary Clinton’s four grandparents were immigrants to the United States. (Source “Hillary Clinton Misrepresents Family History” by Dan Merica, CNN, April 16, 2015). LIE: Hillary Claimed That She and Her Daughter, Chelsea, Were Shot at By a Sniper in Bosnia in March 1996: “I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base” -- Hillary Clinton, a speech at George Washington University, March 17, 2008. TRUTH: “CBS News footage shows Clinton walking calmly out of the back of the C-17 military transport plane that brought her from Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany to the Bosnia airfield.” (Source “Recalling Hillary Clinton’s Claim of ‘Landing Under Sniper Fire’ in Bosnia” by Glen Kessler in The Washington Post, May 23, 1996). LIE: Hillary Claims She Was Named After Sir Edmund Hillary: “On a first-lady goodwill tour of Asia in April 1995—the kind of banal trip that she now claims as part of her foreign-policy ‘experience’—Mrs. Clinton had been in Nepal and been briefly introduced to the late Sir Edmund Hillary, conqueror of Mount Everest. Ever ready to milk the moment, she announced that her mother had actually named her for this famous and intrepid explorer. The claim "worked" well enough to be repeated at other stops. TRUTH: Hillary Clinton was born in 1947, while Sir Edmund Hillary and his sherpa Tenzing Norgay did not ascend Mount Everest until 1953.” (Source: “The Case Against Hillary Clinton” by Christopher Hitchins in Slate, January 14, 2008). LIE: Hillary told the families of the four dead Americans and the American people that the tragedy in Benghazi was caused by a video. TRUTH: In fact Clinton knew the truth from the get go; indeed, as the assault on Benghazi was underway she e-mailed her daughter Chelsea that the attack on the consulate was caused by al-Qaeda. (Source: “Takeaways from The House Benghazi Report by Mollie Hemingway, June 28, 2016) LIE: Clinton repeatedly, and indignantly, asserted that she had turned over all her work-related e-mails.

TRUTH: Missing from the 30,000 e-mails were contacts with Sidney Blumenthal, Tony Blair, and CIA director David Petraeus, among others. (Source: “New Analysis Shows 160 Emails Missing from Clinton’s Disclosure to State” by Rosalind S. Helderman in the Washington Post, Jun 29, 2016. LIE: In a letter to U.S. Representative Trey Gowdy, the chairman of the House Select Committee investigating the deadly terrorist attacks in Benghazi, Hillary Clinton said that the only private e-mail address she ever used while secretary of state was hdr22@clintonemail.com. TRUTH: In fact, Clinton had a second e-mail address, HRod17@clintonemail.com, which she didn’t tell Gowdy about it. (Source: “Everything Hillary Said Was a Lie: by Joe Otto in The Conservative Daily, May 26 2015) LIE: Clinton claimed that her chastising of Michigan Governor Rick Snyder for not doing enough to help families in Flint, Michigan, in regard to the water crisis in Detroit during a debate with Bernie Sanders influenced the Michigan governor to finally become proactive in addressing the crisis of contaminated water. TRUTH: Governor Snyder had actually contacted the federal government two days prior to the Sanders/Clinton debate in order to ask for assistance in addressing the issue of the contaminated water in Flint. (Source: “Hillary Clinton’s Debate Lies, Half-Truths and Misrepresentations” by Ashe Schow, The Washington Examiner, January 18, 2016). LIE: Hillary Clinton asserted that she criticized the war in Iraq before then Senator Barack Obama did. TRUTH: “She did not.” (“Both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump Are Huge Liars So Let’s Stop Pretending We Really Value Honesty” by S.E. Cupp in The New York Daily News, May 24, 2016.) LIE: Hillary Clinton asserted that Bernie Sanders “voted for immunity [for] gun makers and sellers,” which provided them with a “total pass” when it comes to damage and injuries resulting from said firearms. TRUTH: Actually, Sanders voted in favor of an amendment to the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, which removed a prohibition on Amtrak passengers from carrying guns in checked baggage. In other words, Sanders voted in favor of allowing passengers to check their firearms if they provided advance notice that they would be checking a firearm. (Source: “Hillary Clinton’s Debate Lies, Half-Truths and Misrepresentations” by Ashe Schow, The Washington Examiner, January 18, 2016). No matter the reason for Hillary Clinton’s proclivity to lie again and again and again, it is a major problem. Indeed, when the potential leader of a republic is prone to repeatedly lying and engaging in half-truths and misrepresentations there is no telling what it will eventually result in: Undermining the U.S. Constitution of the nation? Political malfeasance of all kinds? Covering up special dispensations for the Clinton Foundation? In the end, the only one who may know for sure – and that’s not even a safe bet when one is a habitual liar – is “The Teflon Blonde.”
