During Obama's early presidency, Katy Abram told the late Senator Arlen Specter, "You have awakened a sleeping giant." The "giant" took its own sweet time coming fully awake, but now it is alert and pumped up...and boy is it p--sed!
While politicos, pundits, and talking heads still blather on about how Trump cannot win the Republican nomination, Trump's juggernaut (mainly fueled by a deep and widespread resentment at smug tin-eared politicians and pundits) keeps barreling along--picking up power and speed exponentially.
The pie-in-the-sky wishful thinking of diehard establishment-junkies centers around the belief that if (when in their book) Ted Cruz drops out, Marco Rubio will pick up his supporters. But that ignores the fact that Cruz supporters will, as likely as not, move to endorse Trump, not Rubio. And the opposite holds true as well; if Rubio drops out, his supporters will mainly move over to Trump, not Cruz.
I would suggest that the Republican "Powers That Be" prepare themselves to gracefully accept what will after "Super Tuesday" be an obvious and undeniable truth--Trump will be the Republican nominee for president.
They should acknowledge that they have a tiger by the tail (or in Trump's case, a lion), and make the best of the situation. There is nothing to be gained by resisting a gale-force headwind, and much to recommend adjusting sails to accommodate a radical shift in the breeze; a rather brisk breeze.
If you'll forgive me one last shift in metaphors: There's a new sheriff in town, and most of the townsfolk aim to see him clean things up around here--regardless of what the entrenched "town council" might think.
