Santa Monica, Calif. – Popular New Zealand hiking track, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, will reopen today, following the eruption of Mount Tongariro earlier this month. This is the first step in a plan to see the one-day hike, attracting over 80,000 visitors every year, reopened in time for the New Zealand summer hiking season.

As a result of recent volcanic activity, the hike holds new appeal and will be an even bigger draw for visitors. With even more steaming craters, volcanic boulders and hot vents, there is plenty of new activity for hikers to see. “The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a popular hiking trail for Canadian visitors and is an iconic New Zealand experience,” says Gregg Anderson, GM North America, Tourism New Zealand. “I’m delighted that we can now welcome overseas visitors back to this great natural wonder.” Tracks to Red Crater and Oturere Hut will open this week following a blessing ceremony. Other sections of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing remain closed while a 3km risk management area is in place. Officials expect this zone to reduce to 2km in the near future. Visitors are encouraged to make use of alternative trails around day hikes are all open and unaffected. The hike is known for its rugged, volcanic appearance.
