Never underestimate Chris Christie

Reluctant Rock Star:  Chris Christie

imageIf anyone has a legitimate right to gripe about the economy he inherited, it’s reluctant rock star, Chris Christie. His spendaholic liberal, Goldman Sachs alum predecessor left the state 46th in the national economic freedom index. Former governor, Jon Corzine resorted to the standard liberal failed experiment of raising taxes on the “wealthy” to cover his staggering budget shortfall. Christie took office with creditors, literally, beating down the doors. The first time I saw Chris Christie, I liked what he had to say and got all tingly at the thought of being rid of Corzine in New Jersey, but tried to keep things in perspective. Corzine was an incumbent, a liberal in a deep blue state and had virtually unlimited funding.

Never underestimate Chris Christie:
Christopher James Christie is fond of saying that he’s been underestimated his whole professional life. The Newark-born son of an Irish father and a Sicilian mother, Christie is the product of respectable but middling schools — the University of Delaware and Seton Hall Law — and enjoyed a successful, if not spectacular, career as a partner in a small New Jersey firm. He served a single term as a Morris County freeholder, but was primaried, and soundly defeated, in his bid for reelection. When, despite a lack of criminal prosecutorial experience, he was appointed U.S. attorney in 2002, some detractors thought it a bit of cronyism — the Bush administration rewarding Christie for the fundraising work he’d done during the 2000 election.

They were wrong. By the time Christie left the job six years later, he had put over a hundred crooked pols — “from the school board to the state house and of both political parties” — behind bars, without losing a single case. And he had tried and convicted terrorists, Mafiosi, and child pornographers; arms dealers, gang members, and corporate hacks.
Evidently, the people of New Jersey had finally wearied of having their taxes raised every fifteen minutes. They decided to throw out the incumbent and give Christie a chance.
And in an extraordinary move, he then declared a fiscal state of emergency, announcing that by executive order he would impound $2.2 billion in appropriations from a fiscal year that was already seven months gone. That figure represented virtually every dollar the state was not legally obligated to pay out for the remainder of the year. In Bagger’s words, it was ‘everything that wasn’t nailed down.’
Naturally, the traditional liberal caterwauling over budget cuts ensued. The loudest bleating coming from “educators” who were outraged at being asked to accept a one year pay freeze and contribute a whopping 1.5 percent of their salaries to their most generous benefits packages. Rather than kowtow to the spoiled brats slurping at the public trough, Christie famously told one teacher that if she were so unhappy with her paycheck, perhaps the best option was to seek employment elsewhere. While the high dudgeon among the Democrats continues, the predicted catastrophes have failed to materialize. The lesson here just may be that when a state has been controlled by liberals for many years, it’s wise to send in an experienced prosecutor to take over for awhile.
