Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper now “border partner” with Obama

Is Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper importing a President Barack Obama style of immigration for Canada? Has nice-guy Harper been agreeing to the groundwork of mega Canadian border control out of sight of Parliament behind closed door meetings in Washington, DC? “Primer Minister Stephen Harper and U.S. President Barack Obama are seeking a sweeping deal to establish a North American security and trade perimeter, opening talks Friday that could lead to jointly operated Canada-U.S. border facilities, an integrated entry-exit system to track travelers and the deployment of “cross-designated” law enforcement officers to intercept terrorists and criminals.” (PostMedia News, Feb. 5, 2011).

Where is the official list of terrorists and criminals intercepted at either the Canadian or American border? In fact it could be reasonably argued that Canada, like the U.S., welcomes potential terrorists and criminals through their cookie-cutter, government controlled immigration systems. According to Canada’s Immigration Program (October 2004) Canada has the highest per capita immigration in the world, although statistics in the CIA World Factbook show that a number of city states and small island nations, as well as some larger countries in regions with refugee movements, have higher per capita rates. (Wikipedia). That’s Canada’s legal immigration story. Illegal immigration in Canada tells an even scarier tale. A 2008 report by the Auditor General Sheila Fraser stated that Canada has lost track of as many as 41,000 illegal immigrants. This number is predicted to increase drastically with the expiration of temporary employer work permits issued in 2007 and 2008, which were not renewed in many cases because of the shortage of work due to the recession. “In Canada the Refugee Protection Division currently has a backlog of 60,000 cases that are scheduled to be heard. Part of the backlog is due to the reluctance of the current Conservative government to fill vacant positions on the board” (Arthur Weinreb, Suite101, April 1, 2010). “At the present time there are about 15,000 failed claimants who are waiting to be removed from Canada. It is also estimated that thee are 38,000 unsuccessful refugee applicants whose whereabouts are unknown. It is not known whether they have left Canada or remain underground.” Yet Harper touts the new integrated border/security and trade perimeter as “vital” to both the safety and prosperity of Canadians, even as critics expressed concerns a future agreement with the U.S. could compromise the nation’s sovereignty. Surely Harper knows how Global Citizen Barack Obama feels about sovereignty. He must know what porous borders at the Mexican-US border is doing to America. Other than making it the first brief visit of his presidency, Obama has snubbed Canada since November, 2008. Why is Harper now saying “It is in Canada’s interests to work with our partners in the United States to ensure that our borders are secure and that we can trade and travel across them as safely and as openly as possible, within the context of our different laws. And that is what we’re trying to achieve here”? Partners in the United States, Mr. Harper? President Obama is shepherding at blinding speed the transformation of the United States of America into a Socialist state. Has Prime Minister Harper been drinking the Kool Aid as poured by Obama mentor Maurice Strong? Canadians everywhere should be feeling the a chill much colder than the current winter blast.
