Liberal Twisted Logic Why Gas is Expensive

Recently, two Washington Post writers, in a half-page spread resplendent with meaningless pie charts and graphs that even a high school student would laugh off, failed miserably to explain, “Why we feel pain at the pump.”

The two “progressive thinkers” stated that the perception that gas prices are soaring must be misleading because gas prices have soared before. Yes, we are feeling the pain, 71% of us, according to their poll, but the portion of income spent on gas is “relatively small.” I am not sure about you, but spending $500 per month to fill up my gas tank is not an insignificant percentage of the average middle class family’s disposable income; it may represent a car payment, a mortgage payment for some, and the food budget for the month, or the prescription bill. Lutz Kilian, a quoted economics professor at the University of Michigan, apparently believes that “results do not provide any reason for panic.” If I have to choose between food and fuel for my car to go to work, it is time to panic. Dan Ariely from Duke said that the worry over gas prices is a “textbook example of an ‘absolutely irrational’ reaction.” Only in the liberal universe of conflicted minds is the fear of $4-6/gallon price for a commodity that drives everything in this economy an irrational reaction. It is irrational to write an article to defend the indefensible with drivel that is aimed at covering up Obama’s failed energy policy. The writers continue, “A small case of nerves at the pump, however, may not be all bad, not even for President Obama, who is getting the blame.” Who else is to blame? The media dereliction of duty is unbelievable. Price “spikes” are good, in their opinion, because it results in less consumption and “stokes interest in alternative sources of energy – key Obama issues.” I cannot wait until we develop enough cheap and affordable wind and solar energy to power our cars and industries, and I am being sarcastic. In the meantime, let us shut down coal and oil so we can return to the dark ages because a small group of individuals in power thinks it is the best for the majority. At the same time, China, India, and Russia are polluting away. The suffering of the population from increased prices on all goods and services due to higher energy prices is not important to liberals as long as Obama is painted in a positive light. It is not about the American people, our country, and the economy, it is always about Obama. We are noticing the high gasoline prices because “gas is sold by itself” and the price of the product is listed in BIG numbers. “You can’t help but notice the price.” In a liberal’s mind, the fact that it costs $80 to fill a tank with gasoline is inconsequential, if they would only list the price in smaller letters, we would not be so upset. As we watch the meter for five minutes, we see the price add up to the final total and we begin to panic, the writers continue. However, we do not panic when electricity adds up outside on a meter. I have news for mentally challenged liberals who refuse to understand the true cause of high prices – deliberate presidential plans and administrative incompetence. Ariely said, “The meter for your electrical bill is outside the house usually, you have no idea how to read it, you don’t stand next to it, and you pay only in retrospect.” Whether I see a gas pump run to a high dollar total in front of my eyes or I am presented with a huge electric bill at the end of the month, I still panic. I panic because it is real money that I have to earn by giving up my free time. When I give up more of my free time, I become a slave to someone else’s failed decisions and policies. I become a slave because my time on this earth is limited. It is gas money that I would not have to spend had the President not imposed a seven-year moratorium on domestic drilling in the Gulf while allowing foreign nations to drill in our own back yard. It is real money that the Fed has debased by printing too much - too much money, chasing too few goods, a direct result of out-of-control spending by this administration. Using more flawed logic, Ariely said that “if you just bought one gallon, you might not remember how much it cost.” Really? If I have to pay $5 for one gallon of gas that I used to pay $1 for, I would now not notice that it costs five times as much? “If you bought 24 yogurts every time, you would probably become more sensitive about the price per yogurt.” This analogy is so insane; I cannot believe this person is actually teaching at Duke. Last time I checked at Sam’s Club, it is vastly cheaper to buy a larger box of yogurt than it is to buy in smaller quantities. Furthermore, we consume yogurt one small container at a time, our stomachs can only handle so much yogurt. By contrast, an engine needs an exact amount of fuel to run, let’s say 15 miles to the gallon. I cannot tamper with this fuel efficiency. I can drive slower perhaps but I cannot control the flow of traffic that causes my car to burn off more or less fuel. Ariely calls fuel consumption the “pain of paying” because we pay and consume immediately. If we somehow had our tanks filled at night by some invisible presence as we slept and we got a monthly bill, we would not be so upset. Really? Almost $500 a month for gas is as painful to a consumer whether it is presented in increments or as a sum-total. I can only summarize that Dr. Savage was right when he wrote, “Liberalism is a mental disorder.” This faux journalism is media bias and gross dereliction of duty.
