Order of Canada, abortion doctor Henry Morgentaler

Another “great honor” bites the dust

Like the Nobel Peace Prize, which has been awarded to the likes of Yassar Arafat, the Order of Canada, this country’s highest civilian citation, has been awarded to abortion doctor Henry Morgenthaler. Morgentaler, who in many ways is Canada’s answer to Dr. Kevorkian, has made a career out of killing the unborn and stirring up no small amount of controversy doing so.

However, what many, perhaps most, Canadians do not realize is that Morgentaler is directly responsible for the precipitous decline in Canada’s birthrate. Abortions that are paid for by Canada’s government healthcare monopoly have resulted in the non-birth of over 3,300,000 Canadian babies since 1965. That’s 10% of the current population. If one takes into account the babies that those 3.3 million aborted souls might have had, Canada’s population statistics and demographics would look markedly different today. Last year as a result of the 2006 StatsCan census, Canadians crowed about the healthy increase in Canada’s population over the 2001 census. Problem with that increase is that we have had to outsource our population growth to Third World nations. So while we are killing on average a 100,000 Canadian babies a year, we have to import on average 250,000 people into Canada per year in order to show growth and maintain our economy. All because of the “work” performed by people like “Dr.” Henry Morgentaler. It’s clear that our moral compass has lost all calibration when the nation honors someone responsible for as many deaths as Morgenthaler and for the demographic disaster that is currently in the making. It’s kind of like honoring Pol Pot whose policies have had a similar effect on the population of Cambodia. But the same individuals who selected Morgentaler as one of this year’s recipients of what is fast becoming a dubious honor are also the same people who are cramming the idea of multiculturalism down Canada’s throat. It doesn’t take a mathematician on the order of Kurt Gödel to extrapolate the statistical results of killing one in three unborn infants. In order to hide that devastating effect our elites have resorted to the importation of population and using the farce of multiculturalism as a mitigating rationale. This is one of the problems of unchecked and rampant liberalism. Ideas that seemed sound in their inception turn out to come back and bite one’s butt thirty or forty years down the line. But by then it’s too late; it’s certainly too late for the 3,300,000 little souls that were never given the opportunity to blossom, thanks to Dr. Morgentaler. We can argue the “morality” of freely accessible abortions until we are blue in the face. As my friend Art Weinreb has pointed out in these same pages today, that isn’t really the issue and no amount of argument will sway either side of the argument. Time and again polling has shown that the abortion question is far from resolved and the majority of Canadians are not in favor of free abortions on demand. What’s clear in awarding Morgentaler the Order of Canada is just how far the liberal elite is prepared to go in advancing their agenda and how little they care about the views and feelings of ordinary Canadians. Like the Nobel Peace Prize that hung in Yassar Arafat’s bunker, the Order of Canada has become meaningless, save for the glorification of our elites’ follies.
