Racial divide

Hyphenating Gabby Douglas

On Thursday, U.S.gymnast Gabby Douglas won the All Around Gold Medal and the NBC commentator rushed to inject race into her win; proclaiming her the first "African-American" to win this event as if her race would hinder her ability to win. Call me confused but I thought she competed as an "American". Even Fox News picked up on the African-American theme and touted it. Apparently we must now also divide our Olympic athletes along racial lines. Seems to me that amounts to racial discrimination.

As I watched her compete I never once thought of her in regard to race. I cheered her on because she was a beautiful, talented and gutsy American athlete. I cried when she won, as well as when they placed the gold around her neck, because she was American and made us proud. The left for years has attempted to divide Americans by race. We are now African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, Asian-Americans, etc. I remember when we were proud to simply be called Americans. The majority of our citizens have bought into the hyphenation game without understanding what it truly represents. The United States Olympic Team is made up of athletes of many ethnic backgrounds, including Danell Leyva. Danell happens to be of Cuban descent. His family suffered much in their quest to relocate to America; yet during the bio spot NBC did on him he proudly proclaimed "I am 100% American". He didn't say I am 100% Cuban-American. It's time for all Americans to stand up against the tactics of the left to racially divide us. Fox News should be ashamed for falling in line with the left-leaning NBC . Gabby Douglas won our hearts and made us proud because she is an American athlete; not because she's a hyphenated anything. We love you, Gabby!
