Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) columnist Heather Mallick, who recently described Sarah Palin supporters as “white trash”, has a twin sister in MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow. Mallick, who also wrote that the Alaska governor “has a toned-downed version of the porn actress look favored by this decade’s woman,” had no basis in labeling Palin supporters as “white trash”. On a roll with News Bloggers-described “ratings through the roof”, Maddow had no basis to spin a scandal on Senator John McCain’s connections, through his aide’s firm, to beleaguered Freddie Mac.

Mallick, who cut off access to complaints on her personal website within days of her diatribe, seems to be AWOL since her attack on Palin, Palin’s daughter Bristol and “hillybilly Alaskans”. Former Air America anchor Maddow whose new show, averages 1.8 million viewers, seems to have based her McCain attack on ammunition from yesterday’s New York Times story, McCain Aide’s Firm Was Paid by Freddie Mac. “One of the giant mortgage companies at the heart of the credit crisis paid $15.000 a month from the end of 2005 through last month to a firm owned by Senator John McCain’s campaign manager, according to two people with direct knowledge of the arrangement.” (The New York Times, Sept. 24, 2008). “The disclosure undercuts a statement by Mr. McCain on Sunday night that the campaign manager, Rick Davis, had no involvement with the company for the last several years.” “Mr. Davis’s firm received the payments from the company, Freddie Mac, until it was taken over by the government this month along with Fannie Mae, the other big mortgage lender whose deteriorating finances helped precipitate the cascading problems on Wall Street, the people said. Canadian journalist Heather Mallick is facing an ugly onslaught from the U.S. right-wing media and its fans for an online column she wrote mocking Sarah Palin as "white trash." The Sept. 5 column on CBC.ca, entitled "A Mighty Wind blows through the Republican convention," had already been on the receiving end of vitriol from some Canadian news organizations. But Fox News picked up on it this week, and unleashed its full fury on Mallick for stating that Palin, the Republicans' vice-presidential nominee, appeals to "the white trash vote" with her "toned-down version of the porn actress look."
