This week’s art news: India at the Tryon

What do the prodigious artists Professor Ken Howard, James Horton, Peter Brown, Patrick Cullen and George Devlin have in common? That is aside from being at the top of their game, of course.
They have all painted India and their work is being shown in an exhibition at the Tryon Gallery, London until May 31. “The plan was hatched a year ago,” explains George Devlin from Glasgow. “I broached the idea with Ken during one of my preview nights at the Portland Gallery. The problem was that most of us were with different galleries: Ken with Richard Green Gallery, Peter with David Messum, Patrick with Indar Pasricha Fine Arts and I am with the Portland Gallery.” These delicacies were solved by Patrick who arranged the exhibition on neutral territory at the Tryon Gallery.

“The event is going very well - there are plenty of red dots on many of my 21 paintings,” adds George, who also has a solo exhibition with 51 paintings at The Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh, running concurrently until June 1. “Interestingly I have noticed customers going for my larger works, which is always a surprise to me especially when we are in such turbulent economic times. But then I recall a wise old gallery owner who used to tell me that ‘when money goes funny savvy investors always buy art’. “It’s been very good timing for me because I needed to get my paintings out of my studio, which is being renovated. We live in a lovely old Victorian house and my studio is in the coach house.”
