European Council on Tolerance and Reconciliation

As the EU broadens its base of power, opposition grows

The European Council on Tolerance and Reconciliation (ECTR), a “tolerance watchdog” and EU pressure group has called on the union to establish units under the guidance of the Ministry of Justice to monitor political, religious & social groups to assure adherence to guidelines of tolerance toward one another.
In particular, group libel is targeted to sanction an organization where it calls out another organization in an intolerant way. Defined ‘vulnerable groups’ will receive special protections, the ECTR report stating “Members of vulnerable and disadvantaged groups are entitled to a special protection” in addition to the normal legal protections afforded by the state. ECTR said it hopes to take “concrete action to combat intolerance, in particular with a view to eliminating racism, colour bias, ethnic discrimination, religious intolerance, totalitarian ideologies, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, anti-feminism and homophobia;” while “overt approval of a totalitarian ideology, xenophobia or anti-Semitism,” will be subject to criminal sanctions. The biggest problems will likely come from the ruling body’s interpretation of religious intolerance and totalitarian ideologies. No doubt Christian proselytizing will be strictly curtailed with Muslims being considered a vulnerable group. Meanwhile anything straying toward s conservatism or further from the centre-right position will be ruled as totalitarian. This despite the fact that half the left-wing governments in Europe already exhibit totalitarianism!

As stated: anti-feminism will be targeted. This will likely mean anyone advocating traditional roles for men and women, even in a religious context, will be subject to some kind of enforcement action. And of course any disapproval of gay-marriage or adoption will be considered homophobic. Opposition has been immediate. European Dignity Watch (EDW), based in Brussels, said the report: “aims to impose governmental control over the social and economic behavior of citizens in the widest possible sense. (It) interferes in an unprecedented manner with citizens’ freedom and rights (and) distorts the concepts of ‘justice’ and ‘equality’. (Through) a reversal of the burden of proof (it) encourages frivolous litigation (leading to) institutionalized public control”. Sophia Kuby, speaking for EDW said the document if implemented “could lead to situations in which vague or unwarranted accusations are leveled against individuals and groups. Faith-based groups and schools, adherents of a particular religion or even just parents who want to teach their children certain moral values would all be put under general suspicion of being intolerant. Even worse, (it) could lead to the possibility that charges are brought on unclear or even without legal grounds. Thoroughly fed up with these kinds of mega-control bureaucratic monstrosities, Europe and its peoples are beginning to kick back. Unfortunately it is mostly those who (rightly sometimes) are branded extremists, and surprise surprise, it’s just these kind of people this proposal is trying to silence. Marine Le Pen, the leader of the French far-right said that the EU as is will eventually collapse just like the Soviet Union did. She has vowed to return the EU to being a “cooperation of sovereign states” and said that Europe’s people had lost control over their currency, their economy, and the movement of people in their territory. Le Pen and Dutch anti-Islam leader Geert Wilders, whose party leads polling in the Netherlands, will meet in November to strategize how to form a block of 25+ members in the Parliament, big enough to be given the privileges of a political grouping. In the past Mr Wilders refused to associate with FN (Le Pen) because he disapproved of the anti-Semitic remarks of Ms Le Pen’s father, Jean-Marie Le Pen. But since she replaced her father in January 2011, Ms Le Pen has tried to improve the party’s image and move it into Left-wing territory on social policy and economic protectionism. This brings them more into line with UK’s British National Party who move for the nationalistic sentiments of left-wing voters with internationally divisive language and the promise of handout protection. Together Ms Le Pen and Wilders have already cultivated links with Austria’s far right Freedom Party, Vlaams Belang in Belgium, the Democratic Party in Sweden and the Northern League in Italy. The new anti-EU bloc would be to the Right of the existing Eurosceptic group in Brussels, Europe of Freedom and Democracy, currently dominated by the UK Independence Party (UKIP). Nigel Farage, UKIPs leader, has ruled out any alliance with FN or PVV (Wilders), saying their views on race and religion were too extreme. Despite this he may find himself voting with them on many issues but his more moderate position may help to forge workable legislation with other more orthodox conservatives while including the far-right alliance. So called moderates in the EU are alarmed, not at the suggestions that ECTR may implement their policies or that the current EU is disastrous, but at the possibility that there are people who want to change it. Sarah Ludford, a Liberal Democrat MEP from the UK, said. “If Eurosceptic parties are successful in 2014, this would create the most extreme European parliament ever, I’m alarmed at not only their racist and discriminatory attitudes but also their protectionism and hostility to the European single market to which three million British jobs are linked.” Meanwhile Guy Verhofstadt, a former Belgian PM, said “If we allow these forces to gain a foothold once again on our continent we will have wasted a century of building closer ties and condemned history to repeat itself.” Where Ludford and Verhofstadt are mistaken is that the so-called extreme forces are trying to stop the march toward a completely centralized European state which tolerates only one primary political & religious point of view with strictly limited variation. The various right-wing groupings, though containing a minority of concerning elements, are simply saying that things have gone too far and it’s time to go back somewhat to where we were one or two decades ago. The Nazis in the 1930s, on the contrary, were doing exactly what the EU is doing today, centralizing control and creating a principal form of acceptable political and religious ideology. The only difference is a single dictatorial leader and a sufficient generated level of hate towards a particular group. Europe will become a dictatorial state on its current path. It may also collapse like the Soviet Union did but that took 72 years to happen. In the meantime, the current generation has a limited amount of time left to push hard for change; or the next generation will find themselves like the Jews in Egypt in the time of the Pharaohs , aimlessly crying out for deliverance or worse, just tamely submitting to them.
