Bowe Bergdahl

A Very Tall Child

Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl has had many adjectives used to describe him since our President negotiated with (surrendered to?) the Haqqani network and granted their demands for the release of five hardcore Taliban leaders who were comfortably ensconced in the federal housing project at Guantanamo Bay in exchange for the release of Sgt. Bergdahl.

Bergdahl has been variously called a traitor, a deserter, a turncoat, and on and on and on. I find one description particularly appalling, and it is being used again and again by Democrats and many on the left. The word they keep using that is particularly galling is the word “child”. On the Fox News Sunday program of June 8th, one of my very favorite talking birds, Juan Williams, repeatedly emphasized the fact that Sgt. Bergdahl is the child of two parents. A child. Imagine that! Bergdahl had two parents who cared about him. Well I guess that absolves him of any possible wrongdoing, doesn’t it? After all, he’s only a child. At least that’s the subliminal message being sent out over the airwaves and in the various left wing blogs and MSM outlets. Bowe Bergdahl is twenty-eight years old. He is not a child, and has not legally been a child for ten years. He is responsible for his actions, and if his actions were less than honorable, then he should face whatever consequences result from those actions AS AN ADULT. Yes, there appears to be an effort to portray Bergdahl as the victim. The use of the “well, he’s already suffered enough” ploy is in full bloom. Why did he “suffer”? Maybe because he acted childishly. Maybe, like some others in government, he decided that playing by the rules just didn’t suit him. Maybe he was just out looking for a golf course. But he is legally responsible for his own actions, and he should face the legal consequences for those actions, even if his commander-in-chief frequently acts in a remarkably similar manner.
