No ‘Deferred Action’ Obama style means here today gone tomorrow

“Now that they’re already here, they can’t stay.” Isn’t that what President Barack Obama is now saying about the thousands of minors now in America having made it through the country’s porous southwest borders?
“President Obama told his Mexican counterpart in a phone call Thursday that immigrants crossing into the U.S. illegally won’t qualify for legalized status or deferred deportation, including children.” (Washington Times, June 19, 2014) “The White House said Mr. Obama and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto discussed “a regional strategy” to address the surge of unaccompanied children coming from Central America, through Mexico, to the U.S.” How can Obama put the genie back in the bottle after he’s let it out? The unsolved mystery surge of Senator Ted Cruz-described “little girls and boys” crossing into America by the tens of thousands has the definite smell of spoiled fish. “There’s nothing about the violence in Central America that would be causing people to be handing over their children, little girls and little boys,” Cruz said in a senate hearing yesterday.

Nor is there anything to explain the recent surge in unaccompanied kids coming into the U.S. Kids, other than Mexican (OTM) crossing the border in 2011 held at 15 percent. In 2014, it’s already soared to 37 percent. “With thousands of children trying to enter the U.S. illegally in recent months, Vice President Joseph R. Biden will visit Guatemala on Friday. (Washington Times) “Mr. Biden will warn officials and parents that illegal immigration is dangerous and that youth won’t be allowed to stay in the U.S.” Biden’s “warning” is the proverbial day late and a dollar short. Guatemala, under the leadership of President Otto Pérez Molina, of Guatemala’s center right Patriotic Party for the past three years, since early in the 20th century has been under the control of democratic governments as well as a series of dictators. “The administration says the new influx of child immigrants is due to rampant poverty and violence in countries such as Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala.” (Washington Times) Poverty and violence has been part of everyday in Guatemala for a long time. So overnight, thousands of parents in Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala somehow decided in unison that rampant poverty and violence in three distinct countries was enough already and packed their children off to freedom’s road? How did the message you could send your kids through Mexico to the southwestern borders of the USA spread like wildfire through three separate countries? Who coordinated the epic road trip and why? How did poverty-stricken Guatemalan, Salvadorian and Honduran parents come up with the money to pay coyotes to lead their children to the promised land? “Critics of the administration, and people immigrating illegally, say the immigrants are drawn by the administration’s policies, including Mr. Obama’s program of “deferred action” on deporting youth. (Washington Times) “The White House said Mr. Obama encouraged the Mexican president to work with the U.S. to return illegal immigrant children safely to their families in Central America. Any guarantees, other than political rhetoric, of their safe arrival home? “In the phone conversation, Mr. Obama “welcomed the opportunity to work in close cooperation with Mexico to develop concrete proposals to address the root causes of unlawful migration from Central America,” the White House said. He also discussed the two nations’ “shared responsibility for promoting security in both countries and in the region.” (Washington Times) In the case of the migrant minors, talk is cheap in both English and Spanish. Is it any wonder why Central American parents who fell for the lure of sending their children to the Promised Land, believing in Obama’s touted ‘deferred action on deporting youth program will now see the scam as one made by the President of the Land of Broken Promises? On Obama’s ‘I’ve-got-a pen-and-a-telephone’ watch, it’s defer today and reverse tomorrow.
