A 1966 sewing machine has formed the foundation of a new business for a British artist.

A few months ago Liz Whiteside from Newcastle launched a range of cushions using her late mum’s 48-year-old New Home sewing machine. Liz, an established painter, recognized the trend for artists to move into textiles. “My mum passed away suddenly two years ago from cancer and it is a lovely way to feel close to her,” says Liz, who has had a major operation herself. “I took to sewing instantly and since then I make all the cushions myself. I really want to keep my process personal and each one is made with love and by hand. I never want to have them mass produced.” Liz produces dog portraits along with a cushion of the dog and notelets, making unique gifts. “Each standard cushion takes me about 20 minutes to make and the deluxe range takes me about half an hour. I’m really enjoying finding different Harris Tweeds to match my range and I’m looking forward to designing more in 2015.” She adds: “I’ve joined Jesmond Dene Markets - a high end art and craft fair, which will resume in March 2015 in Newcastle. I had two very successful sales with them in the run up to Christmas where I’ve also got to meet some very talented people. We love to share ideas and help each other.” Cushions are way forward for British artist Cushions are way forward for British artist Cushions are way forward for British artist Cushions are way forward for British artist Liz Whiteside from Newcastle
