Liberal Little White Lies

"Can't see the forest for the trees", the old saying goes. That means that one’s vision is blocked by too close a proximity to the object in question, that details can obscure the bigger picture. Reality is lost in a forest of individual items, sometimes seemingly unconnected, but when viewed from a higher perspective form an interwoven tapestry, a greater whole.
As Pontius Pilate asked of Jesus 2,000 years ago (or thereabouts) what is Truth? Truth is the agreement between reality and human expression, and human belief. Reality has been defined differently over the ages, Merriam Webster defines reality as: 1 the quality or state of being real 2 a (1) : a real event, entity, or state of affairs (2) : the totality of real things and events b : something that is neither derivative nor dependent but exists necessarily Or you can accept the definition given by science fiction writer Phillip K. Dick; it is that thing which, when you stop believing in it, won't go away. But human beings don't always like reality, and hope springs eternal. Throughout history human beings have attempted to alter reality by altering what they say and what they believe. The former we call lying, and it has been our bosom companion through history. Children learn to lie quite early in life; it usually accompanies their learning to speak. The latter also has accompanied Mankind through our journey, and is equally a coefficient of childhood. Make believe is the hallmark of childhood, and in fact the child's grasp on reality is limited in many ways. Adults think it cute, and even foster it to a degree with tales of Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and tales of storks delivering babies and whatnot. But in the end the child must learn to accept reality or he remains forever a child. Interestingly enough, a belief in the existence of God is present in small children as well, but unlike the childish fantasies it does not go away. In fact, sometimes it is rejected by the growing individual as another tall tale from childhood, but often the individual comes back to God as he learns that reality is actually defined by Him and not by the individual. As Phillip Dick would say, God doesn't go away just because you stop believing in Him. All the other things do. Unless you are a liberal.

What we in America call liberals are the children of a lesser god, so to speak. Their philosophy is rooted in Rousseau, in Nietzsche,, in Thoreau, in Marx, in the 19th and 20th century philosophers that came on the scene preaching a fundamental change in human nature. Bedazzled by the success of technology and science these individuals eschew the concept of a concrete reality, because a concrete reality means the world cannot be perfected through human efforts. This is a horrible notion to them, because they seek to create a paradise outside of the Divine Will, one that is rooted rather in Humanism, in Scientism, in a belief in a purely material world. It's strange; they believe in so many things and yet refuse to believe in reality. They swim in strange waters. Reality is to them ephemeral, an ever-changing kaleidoscope of images and events that mask what they see as a greater reality, a reality imposed by their own will. "Visualize world peace" may be a slogan for bead-wearing moonbats, but it is illustrative of a fundamental belief held by most liberals. Liberals will ultimately deny reality, which means they will deny truth, because they don't want to believe in it. In short, liberal thought is shot through with magical thinking. Ancient Man practiced magic extensively, which was an attempt to control reality by belief and incantation. Modern liberals do the exact same; they believe in things that are clearly at odds with reality, but which they refuse to dismiss because they see their vision as a good one and hope to make the world change through their zealous faith. And they practice incantation, as the media, as academia, as now even many in the science community repeat certain slogans and buzzwords in an attempt to change what the public believes, thinking that by changing the beliefs they can change the reality. In short, liberals lie to themselves as much as to others. Self delusion wouldn't be our problem if the Left would keep it to themselves, but they are missionaristic. They have to be; deep down they know they are wrong, and they seek to drown out that quiet insistent voice that tells them how wrong. They have to get enough people on board to make the voice go away. If those people will not jump off the cliff voluntarily they will have to be made to do so. That's why modern liberal thinking inevitably leads to totalitarianism, to violence, to compulsion. Which leads us to the subject of this essay. What does "hands up! Don't shoot!" have in common with the deflategate scandal? What does Brian Williams have to do with all this? How do Republican Establishment types tie in? What has all this to do with the U.S. national debt, or with the Obama Administration promising hormone treatments to illegal aliens for sex changes, or the ban on the use of the term "war on terror" and the unwillingness of the Administration to refer to attacks by evil men who shout "Aluha Akbar!" as terrorists? It is that in all these instances a denial of reality is at work. In each instance reality is the first casualty in an effort to conceal the Truth from the public and even from the individuals involved. The media promoted "hands up! Don't shoot!" long after it became apparent that Mike Brown did no such thing when he was shot in Ferguson. Activists, intent on advancing black power and revolution, crafted that as a catch phrase, something to get people to rally. And yet, despite the reality of the situation, the media dutifully reported Brown as surrendering. Every news report of the shooting spoke of Brown as being unarmed, and intimated he was murdered for walking while black. The media created the chaos in Ferguson by endlessly covering it as a civil rights violation. This is where deflategate comes in as well. Cheating has become something that is often overlooked because it is convenient for the cheater. Barack Obama cheated his way to the Presidency, destroying his opponents in Illinois when running for state office then destroying his GOP opponent in his Senate bid. He did win fairly (or as fairly as a liberal can win) in his first Presidential bid, but he clearly cheated in his re-election run (many precincts having not a single vote for Romney). Obama cheats with such impunity that we do not even notice it anymore. He makes end runs around laws he doesn't like. He stopped enforcing the DOMA act, for instance. He changed the law in Obamacare on numerous occasions. He has done an executive amnesty, an end run around Congress. The list goes on and on. And Obama is forever stretching the truth, telling tales about people who do not really exist and about events that did not happen. See, he thinks they SHOULD have happened, so he decides to believe them and pass them along as genuine. His wife does likewise. America has become willing to tolerate such cheating. It's why Brian Williams is willing to lie about being shot down in a helicopter. It's why Dan Rather lied about the acts of individuals he claimed were in the military and about George W. Bush's military service. It's why Hillary Clinton lied about being on a transport that was almost shot down in Bosnia. These tales advance a goal, and so it is "acceptable" to lie about them, to make up a fiction that helps the cause. Cheating is a similar thing, an attempt to steal a game or get a grade or whatnot based not on the merit of your actions but by lying. Take the case of Harvard students cheating on papers and tests. No biggie if you don't get caught! Why did they think this? Because, in a word no longer governed by truth, what one can get away with is all that matters. These cheaters had a goal, and they could attain that goal by cheating. They learned that from their professors. And So Bill Belichick and Tom Brady see nothing wrong with gaming the system to their benefit. It was unfortunate they were caught, in their view. All of this stems from the liberal belief that reality is malleable, that there is no such thing as Truth. America has, sadly, walked away from her Judeo-Christian beliefs, and at the core of those beliefs is the belief that there is an objective reality which we mortals must conform to, not the other way around. As long as a sizable portion of Americans believe reality is fungible we will continue our long, horrible slide. Why has the debt grown to the point where our economy may collapse? Because we have been assured that it is just a number, not something real. We'll just digitize more money, add some zeroes to our bookkeeping, and all will remain as before. If we want that, why shouldn't we simply believe it? Because that is magical thinking, and it is childish, the sort of thing a small toddler would believe. Maturity is accepting reality and dealing with it, not pretending it isn't there. Phillip Dick is right; it won't go away if you stop believing in it. But the Left just doesn't agree. We are starting to reap the whirlwind now.
