An Essex artist will be exhibiting her work in Devon. Sylvia Paul from Harwich has 15 paintings at the Marle Gallery in Axminster from April 25 until May 23.

“When I was invited to show my work at the Marle Gallery in Devon I was very excited about this new venture,” says Sylvia. “I have been visiting Devon for many years for holidays and to visit family in the area. I love the countryside in Devon as it is such a contrast to Essex where I live by the coast. The Marle Gallery, now under new ownership with Pat and Lyndsey Adams, is great space for exhibiting a range of work and I'm delighted to be able to show a selection of recent oil paintings and some mixed media work. Some of the oils are inspired by aspects of the Devon countryside the stone walls and also some bluebell woods. The mixed media work includes some vibrant still life in acrylic and paper collage. “I'll be showing 15 paintings alongside other artists in this large gallery space and during the opening on April 25 I will be demonstrating my collage technique. It will be a pleasure to meet visitors to the gallery and chat about my work.” Sylvia has been exhibiting in galleries for more than 30 years and is well established in the East Anglian region. Galleries include the prestigious Thompson’s Gallery, Aldeburgh and The Lime Tree Gallery in Long Melford and Bristol. She has a love of the local landscape and enjoys creating colourful textural oil paintings with a knife from sketches done in the fields and woods. "Living on the coast I am also inspired by the beaches of Essex and Suffolk," she says. "The local shipping industry has provided exciting opportunity for abstract interpretation in my collage work." With a family connection in Japan, Sylvia has visited several times. This has brought not only huge inspiration but also exhibiting opportunities. "I held an exhibition in Niigata in 2011 and in 2013 my exhibition in Nagoaka was a near sell out" Her collages are particularly popular in Japan as they include various papers including English stamps, music and maps, which are of great interest to this market. "I have used Japanese papers in collages with a Japanese theme and one of these was exhibited and sold at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition," she reveals. Her work has also been accepted for exhibition at The Mall Galleries with The Pastel Society, The Royal Institute of Oil Painters, The Royal Institute of Water Colour Painters, The Laing Landscape Competition and The Royal West of England Academy. In 2012 Sylvia won Best in Category 2D at The East West Art Award exhibition at the ROA Gallery in Pall Mall. www.sylviapaul.com
