Rosarian immortality

A Rose Garden of Entertainers

Not a few have gone unacknowledged by rose breeders in their native lands: Claudia Cardinale, Grace Kelly, Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Bob Hope, Gina Lollobrigida, Pail McCartney, Ginger Rogers.
Several only achieved rosarian immortality years after their deaths: Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley, Henry Fonda, Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe. And a very few have achieved prominence in other fields: Grace Kelly, Ronald Reagan, Alan Titchmarsh. The pleasure they have brought to us on the screen, big and small, in song along with coverage in print and online should surely be brought together not withstanding Lynne Anderson’s 1995 hit song, ‘I Never Promised You a Rose Garden.’ In this Garden of the Gods and Goddesses we will eschew suggestions of suitability in borders or containers, as specimens or, as has such as ‘Dolly Parton’, in beds. Instead to avoid embarrassing situations, here are groupings by colour and form. Red Hybrid Teas (HTs): ‘Brigitte Bardot’ (1934-)moderate fragrance (1991 Orard, France)

Not so, according to the New Zealand Rose Society, but, ‘after an old friend of its breeder.’ Perhaps just as well. Six times married, in private life Harrison was not exactly the English gentleman he so frequently portrayed on stage and screen. Margaret Trudeau once proclaimed, “I want to be more than a rose in my husband’s lapel.” Alas, as someone once observed, the rosarian’s path is seldom thornless.
