RACIST SLANDER FROM THE NEW YORKER

Probably one of the most slanderous, incendiary statements I've read from a history-ignorant liberal in a long time. This from Hendrik Hertzberg of The New Yorker, speculating on John McCain selecting Condoleezza Rice as his vice presidential running mate…

To deal first with the obvious: Rice may be “only” the second woman and the second African-American to be Secretary of State, but she is indisputably the highest-ranking black female official ever to have served in any branch of the United States government.
"Only" because no Democrat president ever considered appointing one.
Her nomination to a constitutional executive office would cost McCain the votes of his party’s hardened racists and incorrigible misogynists
. Says who? You? Any names come to mind…?
They are surely fewer in number, though, than the people who would like to participate in breaking the glass ceiling of race or gender but, given the choice, would rather do so in a more timid way, and/or without abandoning their party.
Yes, Condoleezza Rice was our nation's first Black National Security Advisor. Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice were our nation's first and second (in succession) Black Secretary Of State. Both were appointed under a Republican president with no internal party opposition. Certainly, no one considered the appointments a "fairy tale". And with Rice on the ticket the Republicans could attack Clinton or Obama with far less restraint. – Hendrik Hertzberg, The New Yorker According to the Washington Post, "Indeed, Bush's efforts have been quite impressive. Bush has in some ways exceeded former president Clinton, who set a new standard with his appointments of women and minorities to Cabinet-level positions. "Over eight years and 29 appointments, Clinton had in his Cabinet five women, seven African-Americans, three Hispanics (one of them named to two posts) and one Asian-American," Susan Page wrote in USA Today on Dec. 10. "Over four years and 24 appointments, Bush has named to his Cabinet five women, four African-Americans, three Hispanics and two Asian-Americans." Mr. Hertzberg, who refers to Dr. Rice as "Condiment", need bone up on his American history so he may see just whose party contains the vast majority of our nation's "hardened racists". Hertzberg may have conveniently forgotten that as far as "incorrigible misogynists" go, regarding the charges against Bill Clinton, he wrote back in 1998 that "that illicit sex is not nearly important enough to justify all this fuss". Tell that to all the victims of Clinton's misogynist behavior.
