Texas cops refused service at restaurant because, well…

Two Texas police officers were working private security on a construction site Tuesday night when they went to a Lewisville Whataburger for dinner. When one of the officers, Michael Magovern, approached the counter the manager looked at him and said, “We don’t serve police officers.” When he didn’t say anything else, the officers left and went to a Dairy Queen to get some food. Magovern and Officer Cameron Beckham did go back to Whataburger to get the manager’s name

Police chief retires after Black Lives Matter Facebook post

Zander Guy, the mayor of Surf City, North Carolina, called an emergency meeting after a social media post made by Police Chief Mike Halstead was made public. The meeting resulted in the chief retiring. The town agreed to pay Halstead 60 days severance.

A state trooper was shot and killed Sunday, September 13 around 11:30 pm. The shooting took place on I-24 in Lyon County, Kentucky.

Thousands march in Texas for ‘Police Lives Matter’

A few police officers got together to plan a march in honor of Harris County Deputy Darren Goforth who was gunned down execution-style while putting gas into his cruiser at a Houston gas station. The officers were hoping to get a few hundred people to join them.

Police officers go for lunch, waitress pays their bill

On September 3, three members of the Baton Rouge Police Department stopped at Ichibin Sushi Bar and Japanese for lunch. After asking for the bill, the waitress, Crystal Gordon, brought them a receipt instead. On the receipt she had written, “Thank you for what y’all do for us every day. Have a safe and blessed day. I thought the least I could do is buy lunch.”

‘No wonder you people get shot’

On September 9, Palm Beach, Florida Sheriff Ric Bradshaw held a press conference and released a dash cam video of an incident that took place on September 1 in Boynton Beach. A deputy pulled over 62-year-old Joy Feinberg for speeding. It is alleged the woman was doing 51 mph in a school zone where the speed limit is 20 mph.

City of Baltimore to pay millions to family of Freddie Gray

On September 8, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announced the city was settling outstanding civil claims brought by the Gray family against the city. Payments totalling $6.4 million will be paid to the deceased. Gray died after suffering spinal injuries while in police custody. The death of the thug caused widespread rioting in the Maryland city that included injuries and millions of dollars in damages.

Police boycott Obama’s Labor Day breakfast

On Monday, President Obama was in Boston to speak at the AFL-CIO Labor Day Breakfast. Several labor unions, including the police union, were invited to attend. The police declined the invitation. Jerry Flynn, the executive director of the New England Police Benevolent Society, issued a lengthy media release [PDF] explaining why his members would not be attending. Flynn also said his members had planned to protest the event but did not have sufficient time to organize.

Not all stories involving the “war on cops” are bad. Despite the rhetoric and the attacks on American police officers, there is no shortage of people willing to do what is right. George Cooper, an African American, was driving to get breakfast in Winter Haven, Florida on the morning of Sunday, September 6, when he saw a police officer at the side of the road, being beaten.

Teen has deputy’s back as she fills cruiser with gas

Last weekend, 16-year-old McKinley Zoellner was a passenger in his mother’s car while she filled up at a Houston gas station. The teen noticed a female deputy filling her cruiser up at another pump. Just a week before, Harris County Deputy Darren Goforth was executed while filling up his cruise at a gas station in the same Texas city. Despite it pouring rain outside, Zoellner got out of his mother’s car and approached the deputy saying “ma’am, ma’am.”

Flora MacDonald, the ‘Flora Syndrome,’ and of course Donald Trump

Flora MacDonald, a former federal Progressive Conservative cabinet minister passed away late last month. She was 89. Although her ardent supporters would probably disagree, her most memorable accomplishment was to lend her name to what is now referred to as the “Flora Syndrome.” MacDonald worked for the PC party when she decided to run for elective office in the 1972 election. She was successful in being elected as the MP for the eastern Ontario riding of Kingston and the Islands.

Where Canadian PM’s anti-terror travel ban came from

The debate moderator no one is talking about

Thursday was a busy night. At 5 pm (all times Eastern) the second tier Republican debate took place. Later at 8:50 pm, the debate between the top 10 Republican presidential candidates began. And if that wasn’t enough, for Canadians in general and Torontonians in particular, the Toronto Blue Jays were home to the Minnesota Twins. The Jays have become a lot more exciting to watch after the acquisition of Troy Tulowitzki and pitcher David Price shortly before the trade deadline. Ever since Donald Trump began surging in polls in the race for the Republican nominee for president, the Toronto media has compared his rise to that of former Toronto mayor Rob Ford. While some of them "get it," many have no idea what attracts ordinary people to Ford and Trump and using Trump as an excuse to take another shot at Ford who is no longer mayor.
