Under John Marshall, the fourth Chief Justice of the United States, during his thirty-six year run, the courts created legal precedents that stood in direct opposition to the Jeffersonian Republicans, who called for principles more in line with the Constitution that authorizes stronger State governments. The Jeffersonians were concerned about excessive federal power, and the expansion of a centralized system of governance.
