Questions in the classroom are always best in the moment they arise, and waffles are best when they’re right out of the waffle iron. Likewise, baked potatoes are never better than when they first come out of the oven and bacon is best when it can be enjoyed with a little smoke from the campfire. And so it is with late summer flowers. We can enjoy the photos later when it’s cold and they’re long faded, but today we can mix the very air with their fragrance and contrast their color with the deep greens and golds of September. Today, before they are a pleasant memory, they are real and in the present moment.

Just the mention of goldenrod makes my nose start to itch! There is a little yellow wildflower that grows in pastures and empty lots. There was an empty lot on my way home from school that was full of them. I remember walking off the path to gather these to give to my mother. My hot little hands carried them all the way home, and by the time I go there the flowers were quite wilted. But my mother always accepted them graciously. I think of her whenever I see them.
I bought my yearly chrysanthemums today. They announce autumn to me. One of my favorite signs of fall. I did not need to go shopping today, but you can't wait until mid-October. For goodness sakes, you need every day of autumn that you can squeeze out of these. So you see, I HAD to go shopping today so I could enjoy them tomorrow and every day that can be celebrated in all its glory!
