The Indiana University: I had landed at a place that turned out to be wonderful, and I had only just arrived

Remember When--August of 1971

Author’s note: Recently friends and I have been working together to welcome an exchange student from Europe to the Indiana University Campus for a semester abroad. Many memories flooded back into my mind as we worked to offer an experience that would be as remarkable as mine was.

Oh, they were heady days. We still had troops in Vietnam, but President Nixon had pulled troop numbers way down. The drawings for the first lottery draft had come and gone and I had a very high number. I had finished high school that year with improving grades, but a very good thing had happened when I finally had a history class during my senior year that was taught well. It was a first for me. Of course my favorite sentences were about the trees near the Jordan River. I could almost see it and feel it. "The pathway along the Jordan River passed underneath beautiful mature trees. It was pleasant and cool in the Summer time, glorious and colorful in the Fall, serious and somber in the winter time, and vibrant with bright greens and abundant redbud blooms in the Spring."
Also, your description of the majestic thunderstorm was wonderful! Made the hair want to stand up on my neck. Excellent.

I married and did not go to college until the kids were gone about 1996. My older brother had gone to San Jose State in the mid 60s. Because the weather was different in San Jose than in LA, he enjoyed a crisp fall. I remember visiting him. Leaves turned colors there. I didn't really have that in LA much. So my thoughts of college meant gold sweaters and wool-plaid skirts.

I got my AA as an Administrative Assistant. I look back and remember that I never want to eat a Hot Pocket again in my life! It did open doors for me and nobody can ever take that away from me. However, my dreams of gold sweaters and plaid skirts went the way of the Ronald Reagan movies. Born a decade too late or just in the wrong part of the country. Would have loved having 4 seasons on a college campus! What nice memories you have.
