On June 23, 2015, Abu Muhammad al-Adnani, spokesman for the Islamic State, announced the establishment of Wilayat Qawqaz (Caucasus Province). The addition of the new subject province into the Islamic State thus joined the series of alliances made by the organization over the last year, since it announced the establishment of an Islamic caliphate headed by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as caliph.
