Survival in Tough Times: The words of Katherine Lee Bates just shock me now. What a time she knew, when the towers of alabaster were the pillars of a great civilization now fallen on hard times

Thine Alabaster Cities Gleam

Alabaster, noun
A dense, translucent, white or tinted fine-grained gypsum.

Katherine Lee Bates wrote the poem in 1893, a remarkable year by any standard. She traveled from Boston to Colorado Springs, observing and marvelling all the way. Stopping at Niagara Falls, then the Columbian Exposition in Chicago, she witnessed that astonishing celebration of the potential of free people.

Now in the 21st Century many are ashamed of what the nation has disintegrated into. Only the very old, like myself, know and remember what a great example the USA used to be to the world. It is no more.

Nations end much like topsoil becomes exhausted.

The beginning of the end started with Woodrow Wilson's election and subsequent creation of the Federal Reserve. He was the first globalist president and he was responsible for the New World Order.

Thank you, Dr. Smith, for a beautifully written commentary on America when it was still "shining" from sea to sea. I shed some tears reading your commentary, but I also recalled many good memories of traveling to some of the cities you mentioned when they were still vibrant and beautiful. I pray every day for the future of America.

I also read your book Freedom Farm and, as a writer myself, really appreciated your writing style. I hope you'll continue writing for CFP and other publications.

Oh, Dr. Smith, what a great article and so true. I traveled in an RV and worked in state parks all over the country for the better part of 13 years and saw the mountains, prairies, huge lakes and oceans and saw history which is now being destroyed. I saw improvement in race relations in the 60's and destruction of them in 2008 + 8. I saw job pride and work ethic during those same time periods. I see enablement and handouts now. I grew up on a farm in the 40's and 50's and the earth under our feet was respected and productive. In 2024, it is destroyed, cemented over, built upon and rural areas are disappearing. Farmers struggle to feed America, much less the millions of non-Americans who are filling our land. America the Beautiful is just that. And once visited the Merrimac Caverns years ago, where in the bowels of rock was a natural amphitheater. In that cavern, they had brought in music somehow...and we heard Kate Smith sing, "God Bless America" (which equals America the Beautiful in my opinion). In listening to that, we cried. Our America has been blessed by God. We forgot to thank Him. Now America is in the throes of being judged by God. The future is not going to be pretty during that judgement. But those who can still remember, will know what you have written about and will always wish for leadership in our land of someone who loves our nation as we do to return our beautiful county back to the time when it was blessed. God help us. Thank you for the article.
