Toronto, August 26, 2010 – B’nai Brith Canada welcomes news of the decisive action by the RCMP, Ottawa Police Service, Sûreté du Quebec, Canada Border Services Agency, CSIS and all the INSET team, that have worked tirelessly to investigate and apprehend individuals with suspected ties to Al-Qaeda who stand accused in an alleged terrorist plot against Canadian targets.
Frank Dimant, Executive Director of B’nai Brith Canada, stated, “This is yet another wake-up call that terrorism is a reality in Canada. While the Jewish community has been only too aware of the threat of terrorism in the past, this is a danger that all Canadians face. The terrorists are here and ready for action, whether Al- Qaeda or Hezbollah. In this case, the Government, police forces and security agencies have all proven that they are prepared and determined to meet this threat head-on.
“Now all communities must play their part by co-operating fully with the investigation and confronting any internal issues, such as indications of the presence or influence of home-grown supporters of terrorism.
“B’nai Brith Canada has long advocated for strong anti-terror laws. While the current legislation includes tools that police reportedly found very effective in this case, ongoing review of the current legislation is necessary to ensure that it meets both current and future realities.”
