Canadian ‘conservative’ senator wants to ban marketing to children

Earlier this week, Senator Nancy Greene Raine introduced Bill S-228 in the Senate. Known as the Child Health Protection Act, the bill calls for amendments to the Food and Drug Act that would prohibit the marketing of food and drinks directly to children. If Greene Raine gets her way, there will be no more marketing to children. No McDonald’s Happy Meals with toys. No more Tony the Tiger or other cartoon characters emblazed on cereal boxes. And companies such as McDonald’s and Wendy’s will no longer be able to sponsor youth sports teams with their logos emblazed on uniforms. That’s no biggie; that’s what the taxpayers are for. You see marketing to children for things Greene Raine finds unhealthy should be illegal. Of course children do not buy these goods, their parents do. And Canadian parents are just too dumb or too uncaring to be able to look after their young offspring so Greene Raine wants the government to step in and do it for them. Greene Raine defends this attack on freedom and choice as a way to combat the obesity “epidemic.” And it is easy to justify under Canada’s government-run healthcare system.

The raising of children should be governed by the state; any role parents have is secondary

As a “conservative,” Greene Raine is no different than Hillary Clinton and Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne. The raising of children should be governed by the state; any role parents have is secondary. Under the bill, it will be illegal to market to children 13-years-of age and younger. While we expect these sort of ideas to come gushing out from Liberals and the socialist NDP, it is particularly troubling that Canada’s very own Bill de Blasio was appointed to the Senate as a Conservative senator by Stephen Harper. Then again, it is really difficult these days to distinguish between liberals and conservatives in this country. Green Raine’s claim to fame is as a skier. She won gold and silver medals at the 1968 Olympics in Grenoble and had several World Cup wins. Although the grandmother no longer skis competitively, the introduction of the bill shows she still has the ability to go downhill quickly. No matter what you think of Stephen Harper there is little doubt, to use the vernacular, he sucked when it came to making appointments. Mike Duffy, Pamela Wallin, Patrick Brazeau are prime examples. Okay so the Duff beat the rap but that did not alter the fact he and other Stephen Harper appointments shamelessly spent taxpayers’ money was well as any Liberal could.

And then there’s the Supreme Court of Canada. Many conservatives criticize the court for being “too liberal.” It is worth remembering that Rosalie Abella is the only current justice who was appointed by a Liberal (Chrétien). Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin was a Mulroney appointment while the other seven, count’em seven, are all sitting on Canada’s top court as a result of PMS (Prime Minister Steve). Greene Raine’s latest outburst against freedom is the result of another bad Harper appointment. The reality is in today’s world, children 13 years and younger do not purchase those things that the nanny senator does not want them to have. Their parents take them to fast-food restaurants and buy cereal. Greene Raine’s rationale for the necessity of the law is that it’s just too hard to be a parent these days. Just because the senator finds raising children too difficult is no reason to infringe on the freedom of Canadians by legislating restrictions on marketing. The obesity epidemic the former skier talks about is a relatively recent phenomenon; Tony the Tiger has been around a lot longer than this so called epidemic has. Could this epidemic possibly be the result of kids not being allowed to play outside because it’s too dangerous? Could it be kids spend too much time sitting around using computers and other electronic devices? No, it is all poor Tony’s fault, not the fault of those parents who allow their children to lead a sedentary lifestyle. As CPC leadership candidate Kellie Leitch said she is willing to talk about issues such as freedom and screening immigrants for anti-Canadian values. Her competitors are simply going to argue they should be elected because they are the most fiscally responsible. This is what conservatism has been reduced to in Canada. Other than taxing and spending they are indistinguishable from their counterparts in the progressive parties. Liberals, Tories, same old story. That expression has never been more meaningful than it is today.
