TORONTO – Vehicle sales in Canada increased in August up 3.2% compared to August 2010. Canadian year-to-date vehicle sales year remained relatively stagnant at 1.7% above last years sales volume, at 1,089,605 . For the AIAMC membership, August sales of 70,659 were down 2.4% compared to August 2010 sales and overall sales for AIAMC members year-to-date fell to 562,913 down slightly (1.8%) from year-to-date sales in 2010.
Truck sales overall, were up 5.8% from August 2010 resulting in truck sales of 79,589. The truck share of the overall market was 56.7%, an increase over last August’s share (55.3%). For AIAMC members, truck sales were up 4.4% in August to 28,005 . Trucks represented 39.6% of total AIAMC member sales, higher than the 36.6% share of sales last August. “The economic roller coaster ride that was the month of August has impacted consumer confidence levels but not vehicle sales,” said David Adams, President of the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers of Canada (AIAMC). “Normally, we see a pretty high degree of consistency between consumer confidence levels and vehicle sales, but that was not the case in August with sales rising 3.2% while consumer confidence fell 6.6 points. However, overall vehicle sales in August were below the five year average sales for the month of August (146,086),” added Adams. “Despite sales growth compared to last year, August represents the fifth month so far this year where monthly sales have been below the five year average. That said, the August results are encouraging.”

The sales results were mixed for AIAMC member companies with some members struggling with double digit losses compared to 2010 while others managed impressive sales gains and, in some cases, recorded the best August sales ever. AIAMC members’ market share for August was 50.3%, down from 53.2% in August 2010. Positive sales results arising from within the AIAMC membership were as follows: Highlights:
  • Audi – August sales of 1,466 up 6.5% from August 2010.
  • BMW – Record August sales of 2,844 up 4.1% from August 2010.
  • Hyundai - Record August sales of 11,507 up 0.9% from August 2010.
