Hyundai Auto Canada Corp. announced today that the Hyundai Elantra sedan was the best-selling compact car and best-selling passenger car in Canada for second consecutive month. In February, the second full month on-sale of the all-new 2011 model, the Elantra posted the best month in the nameplate's history with sales of 2,820 units. Year-to-date sales for 2011 total 5,073 vehicles, an improvement of 136.9 percent over the same period in 2010. The traditional leaders of the segment, the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, posted February sales of 2,784 and 1,975, respectively.

"Sales of Elantra have soared along with fuel prices over the course of the past month," said Steve Kelleher, President and CEO of Hyundai Canada. "With the cost of fuel over $1.20 per litre, standard highway fuel economy of 4.9 L/100 km is hard to ignore. Elantra was designed to save Canadians money at the pumps without forcing them to give up style, features, safety, or versatility. We've been confident Canadians would recognize Elantra's strong value, but to become the leading passenger car in Canada in just the first two months is truly an unexpected honour." On sale since December 2010, the 2011 Elantra sedan starts at $15,849 and delivers the best standard fuel economy in its class thanks to a 148-horsepower engine and 6-speed transmissions. Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, six airbags, and electronic stability control (ESC) are all standard equipment. Strong Elantra sales helped Hyundai Canada achieve its 26th consecutive month of year-over-year sales growth with a total of 8,700 vehicles sold. In doing so, Hyundai also earned the title of best-selling import brand in the country for the month of February. Added Kelleher: "Achieving the title of best-selling import brand in Canada speaks to the comprehensive value to be found across our showroom." Kelleher went on to say that he expects Elantra will continue to lead Hyundai Canada's sales results into the foreseeable future. "We don't believe buyers in the compact segment should have to accept mediocre styling and content. Elantra is helping Canadians to realize they don't need to compromise."
