Just in case you think Barack Obama hasn't done enough damage to Israel yet, the man still has 22 days left in his presidency. He appears determined to use all of them to the fullest possible horrific effect. Normally I wouldn't take seriously anything Jimmy Carter says, but given how much earth Obama seems determined to scorch before leaving office on January 20, we might want to keep an eye on this idea.
By allowing the passage of a UN resolution that makes West Bank and East Jerusalem settlements illegal under international law, Obama set the political stage for the further legal sanctioning of Israel, and helped set up the pretext for the UN to draw new borders making the so-called "occupied territories" part of a new Palestinian start.
The latter is the ultimate goal of Israel's enemies because it effectively leaves Israel defenseless against future attacks, which are sure to come. But hey, you've got 22 days! The UN is probably willing, so why not just go ahead and do it now? Jimmeh writes in the New York Times that this is exactly what Obama should do:
I am convinced that the United States can still shape the future of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict before a change in presidents, but time is very short. The simple but vital step this administration must take before its term expires on Jan. 20 is to grant American diplomatic recognition to the state of Palestine, as 137 countries have already done, and help it achieve full United Nations membership.

The Security Council should pass a resolution laying out the parameters for resolving the conflict. It should reaffirm the illegality of all Israeli settlements beyond the 1967 borders, while leaving open the possibility that the parties could negotiate modifications. Security guarantees for both Israel and Palestine are imperative, and the resolution must acknowledge the right of both the states of Israel and Palestine to live in peace and security. Further measures should include the demilitarization of the Palestinian state, and a possible peacekeeping force under the auspices of the United Nations.
A "peacekeeping force under the ausipices of the United Nations" might as well be called Israel's Pallbearers. If that's all Israel has to protect itself against future attacks from the likes of Iran, Jordan and Syria, Israel is done. True, Israel's armed forces remain capable and fierce, but you can't defend yourself when you've given your most determined enemies the prime territory they would need for staging deadly attacks against you.
That is exactly what Carter's proposal would do.
Would Obama do this? I want to say no - not because he doesn't favor it but because he'd likely consider it a political bridge too far - but I wouldn't have thought he'd push the Kill Israel resolution that passed the UN without his objection on Friday either. Obama appears to see his final days in office as a last-gasp opportunity to achieve the fondest dreams of the left before Donald Trump can stop him. The left and the "international community" badly want the part of Israel captured in the Six Day War of 1967 to be given to the Palestinians as a state of their own. Once Trump becomes president, the U.S. will veto any such move. Are they willing to push this move through the 22-day window they've got? Is Obama prepared to signal them that all is clear to go ahead and make it happen?
Let's remember, this comes from Jimmy Carter and not from Obama himself. There is no evidence that Obama has ever been influenced by Carter's advice, and the Israelis have found it wise for decades to ignore Carter's hateful rants against them. But if a former president would say something like this on the record - even one with no credibility like Jimmy Carter - you have to think Obama might at least be thinking it.

End-times eschatologists might want to pay attention to what does or doesn't happen here. Nothing in end-times prophecy that concerns the fate of Israel contains any reference that could obviously be interpreted as being about the United States. My guess has always been that this is because before those events take place, the U.S. abandons its role as Israel's protector. Granted, Obama's current positions will not be Trump's positions. But if Obama allows the UN to establish boundaries for a recognized Palestinian state - and even more so, if Obama grants recognition to said state and thus clears the way for it to have UN membership - it will be very difficult for Trump to reverse the effects of what Obama has done.
That would set the stage for attacks on Israel that only God could stop. And if you know your end-times prophecies, you know what that means.
