As of this morning, the top seller on NFLShop.com is a Kaepernick Nike Scarlet Game Jersey, besting Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliot and New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham as the most popular jersey leading into the 2016 NFL regular season.
Kaepernick jerseys have experienced a steady climb in popularity since the QB decided that he would not stand for the National Anthem during 49ers preseason games. His explanation was that he would not stand up because he refused to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.
This has certainly struck a chord with a wide demographic, causing some people to burn Kaepernick jerseys and many others to buy the jersey of a QB they have never before supported for a team they could care less about. The purchase of a Kaepernick jersey has become much more than a sign of support for a football player; people believe that buying a jersey is backing a cause.
I have no way of knowing for sure, but my guess would be that it's not serious or even casual football fans who are causing the spike in Kaepernick jersey sales - any more than that thug you see wandering the streets with the backward Raiders hat could identify Derek Carr as Oakland's starting quarterback or tell you the Raiders are in the AFC West. It has nothing to do with that. It's a symbol of . . . what? Probably not rebellion so much as just plain old attitude. Ain't no way The Man be mussin' wit' me, bro.

The Kaepernick jersey is no different. It's a cheap and easy status symbol that says "f*** the pigs" without requiring you to actually put that sentiment on the record. Obama's affirmation of Kaepernick's position - that the police are a bunch of racist pig brutalizers - was probably all the nudge these ne'er-do-wells needed to go out and pay good money for the jersey of a man who may not take any more snaps this season than most of them will.
By the way, just so there's no mistake: I've heard a lot of my fellow Christians upset that the criticism of Kaepernick amounts to idolatry because we're elevating reference for the anthem or the flag to the same level as the worship of God. If that was really the issue with Kaepernick, I would agree.

But it's not. The issue with Kaepernick is his slander of police officers, aided and abetted by the news media and Democrat politicians who have twisted the truth about isolated incidents for the purpose of persuading the country that unjust brutality by rogue white cops against innocent black citizens is rampant. They falsely presented Michael Brown as an innocent. They falsely invented the words "hands up, don't shoot." They tried to criminalize the actions of Baltimore cops who had done absolutely nothing wrong. And they go straight to the race of the people involved in any police incident - provided the cops are white and the suspects are black, of course - to make you think this is all over the place instead of just the incidents they choose to trumpet, usually in a matter that's very far from what anyone could call accurate.
