Cuba's Ladies In White ("Damas de Blanco") are the mothers, daughters, wives and sisters of Cuban prisoners of conscience of the repressive wave of 2003, known as the Black Spring, when 75 peaceful dissidents were apprehended and sentenced to long prison terms. The Ladies meet each Sunday for Mass and walk together in procession holding flowers. They have been subjected to government-organized mob attacks, threats, detentions, and an assortment of harassments, including most recently this past week during their walks in commemoration of the anniversary of the Black Spring.
Participants will meet at the North Fountain in front of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (86th and 5th Ave), to walk alongside the perimeter of Central Park, ending at the Jose Marti Statue.
The event is being organized by Raices de Esperanza, a network of young Cuban Americans spread all around the United States, with the help of activists from the area.
