Last night on MSNBC's Hardball, NBC's chief White House correspondent, Chuck Todd, claimed that the White House had not anticipated the "swift boating" of Bowe Bergdahl. Then, an astonishing thing happened. Host Chris Matthews got something right.
Allow yourself a moment to let that sink in, and then watch the video....
Sure, we could dig into why the whole "swift-boating" claim is ridiculous to begin with, but we're going to give John Kerry a pass today. What's interesting about this is not a failed Presidential candidate's war record. It's that the Bergdahl scandal is so indefensible that the normal administration talking points aren't enough to insulate the White House.
Usually, when the Obama administration gets trapped in an ugly scandal, they dodge the fallout by arguing that it's a non-story which Republicans have ginned-up and are trying to use against them. They're trying to run that same play in regards to the illegal prisoner exchange but, as we saw with Van Jones, it's not working.
The President is so deep in the weeds on the Bergdahl issue - so alone within his own party - that not even Chris Matthews and MSNBC can swallow the lies.
