Dina Friess – who is 85 years old, frail and has dementia – broke her hip when she fell Sunday in her Sunningdale home.(2 hour drive over narrow MT roads)

If that weren’t enough, Friess and her family were told she would have to go by ambulance from Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital to Cranbrook for surgery because her injury wasn’t life- or limb-threatening. “Our concern is there are already risks to her having the surgery, risks to her not having the surgery – things like pneumonia, blood clots – so we don’t want to add extra stress by putting her in an ambulance for three hours over a mountain pass,” said her daughter Barb Leavitt.
