First Obama lies

And Now Senator Schumer is Lying about Job Losses

You know, our job losses are bad enough without President Obama and now Senator Chuck Schumer lying about it all and making it sound even worse than it is. But this particular lie is a very particular lie, one that is aimed to make the presidency of George W. Bush the bad guy.

Job losses occurred during Bush's last year in office, of course. But both the president and now Schumer are blatantly lying about the extent of those losses. Just last week President Obama used this lie, as he did in mid September. Here is what the president keeps saying:
"When I came into office, we were losing 700,000 jobs per month. Credit was frozen so that small businesses and large businesses alike couldn't borrow. You couldn't get an auto loan even if you had good credit. People were losing their homes at an extraordinary pace."
Of course, the truth is that he did not inherit any 700,000 job losses a month. As my Friend Maggie Thurber noted on September 22:
According to CNNMoney.com, job losses in November 2008 were 584,000 and job losses in December 2008 were 524,000. Total losses for the months of September and October 2008 were 792,000, so clearly neither month was '700,000.' U.S. News and World Report says that the January 2009 job losses were 598,000, while the New York Times reported February 2009 job losses of 651,000.
So, what we have here is a presidential lie. Job losses have continued to get worse even with this president's useless "stimulus" efforts. And now, Senator Chuck Schumer adds his voice to the false meme. On the October 4 episode of ABC's "This Week" with George Stephanopoulos, Schumer jumped into the Bush bashing lie that his president has been playing for the last several months.
And let me just say one other thing here, broader-term. The stimulus is working. The American people see it. Forty percent has been spent. Before the stimulus, we were losing 700,000, 800,000 jobs a month, a huge amount. It's going down. The number now is about 300,000. And Alan Greenspan said, it should turn around soon.
Why the media allows these guys to just tell a flat out lie without pressing them on it is beyond me… except for the fact that the Old Media wants Schumer and the President to get away with their lies.
