Brutal Truth in a Pink Blazer

It’s one for the books. Even as Toronto City Council lefties were sharpening their knives to stab conservative Mayor Rob Ford in the back on his inauguration, Hockey Night in Canada commentator Don Cherry preempted them with a verbal attack on the city’s long standing Loony Left. Decked out in a pink sports blazer in honour of a lefty who had called him “a jerk in a pink suit”, Cherry took aim with his words and fired. The mealy-mouthed, politically correct, hypocritical left, not used to ever hearing the truth in the council chamber, were horrified and are still smarting.

“I say he is going to be the greatest mayor this city has ever, ever seen as far as I’m concerned and put that in your pipe, you left-wing kooks,” Cherry said before hanging the chain of office around Ford’s neck. The chain of office around Conservative Mayor Rob Ford’s neck will keep the left awake long nights. “I was called maudlin for the troops because I honour the troops, this is the kind of (stuff) you’re going to be facing Rob, with these left-wing pinkos, they scrape the bottom of the barrel.” The reaction of council’s far left, new and old, was downright comical. As Cherry was speaking, `Councillor Newsman’ Adam Vaughan turned his back to him, in a show of distaste. But Vaughan long ago turned his back on commonsense and anything even remotely right of centre. Stretching as lefties are wont to do, “It’s the equivalent of staging a war protest at a soldier’s funeral,” was Vaughan’s take on Cherry’s comments. Councillor Paula Fletcher, former leader of the Manitoba Communist Party of Canada, who rode into Toronto City Hall on the coattails of NDP leader Jack Layton, claimed to be taken aback by Cherry’s comments. Citizens of Toronto were more than taken aback with the highhanded, haughty way she treated a citizen deputant which has been captured forever, courtesy of YouTube.

Then there’s “new councillor” Mike Layton, whose only claim to fame is being the son of publicity hound Jack Layton. “He shouldn’t put anyone under attack like that, it’s just inappropriate. It’s not his place to make off-hand comments like that. He was the mayor’s emissary.” (yada, yada, yada.) The truth is always hard to take, particularly when you’re a lefty. If only left wing politicians could be as genuine as former coach Don Cherry. Years ago, Cherry was a columnist for Our Toronto (later Toronto Free Press) the forerunner of Canada Free Press (CFP). Feisty as it was, Our Toronto was the little guy among rich Toronto newspapers like the Toronto Star and Globe and Mail. But that never stopped the even back then celebrated Don Cherry from taking the time to sign copies of his Our Toronto columns outside the Maple Leaf Gardens after game time. To Don Cherry, average teenagers were worth his time. When it comes to caring about others, Don Cherry is the real McCoy. Toronto pinkos are only hypocritical whiners on the public purse strings.
