So the question remains: Why would our political leaders deliberately impose energy policies that will unquestionably make us all a lot poorer?

Engineering poverty

A lot of North American politicians appear to have a tin ear when it comes to the effects their policies impose on their constituents. The current global warming fetish is a case in point, with politicians of all stripes and jurisdictions feverishly attempting to out-green each other. In the process the people those politicians are supposed to serve will ultimately pay more for less, as ill-considered solutions result in steep energy price increases.

Barack Obama’s obsession with reducing America’s carbon output will be particularly devastating to the North American economy as the price of automotive and aviation fuels, hydroelectricity, natural gas and other sources of energy will climb far ahead of the inflation curve. Obama keeps harping on “green jobs,” which experience in other countries such as Spain and Britain has demonstrated sacrifice 2.2 regular jobs for every so-called green job. Then there’s the way Obama is going about getting his way. Realizing that Congress would not play along with Waxman and Markey’s harebrained scheme to tax the bejeezus out of energy users, Obama is now making an end run around Congress by getting the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to start regulating energy use. The opening salvo in this gambit came about as a result of the EPA to declare carbon an environmentally hazardous substance in need of regulation. Carbon is one of the four essential elements that makes life on earth possible and over 99% of all life on this planet is carbon-based. So theoretically the EPA could tax individuals for breathing, as each breath a human expends is essentially comprised of carbon. And $5.00 gasoline? It’s just around the corner, as the US government has become ever more restrictive in how and where energy producers can work. So long as Obama is in office there will be no new drilling for oil anywhere in the continental United States as his end game is to run up the price of oil to $200+ per barrel, making it impossible for a large portion of the US population to drive. This, incidentally will be a huge windfall for America’s sworn enemies, such as Iran, Libya and Hugo Chavez’s Venezuela and will result in a higher incidence of Islamist violence as much of that American oil money finds its way into the pockets of al Qadea, Hezbollah and Hamas. But that isn’t the worst of it, as the cost of everything, including food, clothing and other products will rise sharply as a result of the increases in the cost of energy. In addition, families will be challenged to keep their homes comfortable, particularly in climates with more pronounced weather extremes. It’s not unrealistic to expect some people living in poverty to die as a result of these increases in energy costs. But Obama isn’t the only North American leader who has bought into the disaster porn narrative of global warming. In Canada individuals like Premier Dalton McGuinty are enacting policies that are downright harmful to Canadians. Last year McGuinty’s henchmen ordered Ontario hospitals to close beds, departments and lay off nurses in an effort to cut back on the cost of healthcare. Yet at the same time the McGuinty government entered into a contract with South Korea-based Samsung, guaranteeing that company $10 billion in revenue to build wind turbines that are ungodly eyesores, pose environmental dangers and kill more birds per month than the worst trailing pond in Alberta does in a year. Worst of all, these monstrosities are not guaranteed to work and the difference in price between a kilowatt hour (Kw/h) of coal-generated electricity and a Kw/h of wind-generated electricity is obscene. Even the most generous analysis places wind-generated electricity at 50% more than coal-fired. That’s when the turbines actually work as their capacity factor is 34% vs. coal’s 85%. Both Ontario and British Columbia introduced a new value added “harmonized tax” last summer that added an extra 8% and 7% respectively to the cost of gasoline, home heating fuel and electricity. And this in the middle of the worst recession since 1929! This poses a serious question: Are our political leaders deliberately attempting to sabotage our economy and if so, why? If the sabotage is not deliberate, then the reason is because they are stupid and out of touch. Neither Barack Obama, nor Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty, nor former British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell strike me as particularly stupid. In fact Obama is touted as the smartest man in America. So the question remains: Why would our political leaders deliberately impose energy policies that will unquestionably make us all a lot poorer?
