Autism, Michael Savage

The Day Canada Free Press dumped Michael Savage

Jumping to the defense of nationally syndicated radio giant Michael Savage for standing by his criticism of the autism “racket”, yesterday WorldNetDaily (WND) wrote that the autism controversy was “sparked by a left-leaning media watchdog’s campaign against him.” Wrong. No one other than a loose-tongued Michael Savage sparked the autism controversy.

Let it be put on the public record that Canada Free Press (CFP) staff once worked for pay on the Michael Savage website. When his barrage of notes in capital letters and `employer’ abuse became too much, last March, we proudly dumped Savage. Putting it on the public record was not something WND did yesterday. At last count, the Internet giant was being paid to post the Savage site, taking over when we quit. Indeed Savage’s e-mail address went from michaelsavage@michaelsavage.com to michaelsavage@wnd.com. The website went from MichaelSavage.com to michaelsavage.wnd.com (See screenshsot here.) Those details out of the way, the Michael Savage autism issue is not all about a controversy against Savage sparked by Media Matters, it’s that Savage, who called them “brats” threw children suffering from autism under the bus. During his July 16 radio show, Savage said, “I’ll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. That’s what autism is.” Savage said, “They don’t have a father around to tell them, `don’t act like a moron, you’ll get nowhere in life…Straighten up. Act like a man. Don’t sit there crying and screaming, idiot.” Savage, father of son, R. “Goldencloud” Weiner and school teacher daughter, Rebecca Lin Weiner-Yops should understand that parents tend to be very defensive of their children and parents include ones who are struggling to raise autistic children. But Savage seems bent on making himself the victim in this controversy that won’t go away. “He told WND that Media Matters itself is as much a part of the story as autism. Acting like the HIV virus, he said, “they invade the body politic and mimic the defense cells until they poison the entire organism.” (WorldNetDaily, July 22, 2008). “Why would I have chosen to attack defenseless children when I’ve never done so in my entire life?” he asked. “Think about that. What would I have gained by doing it? Nothing. I didn’t do it. The fact of the matter is the enemies of the truth did it, using you, the parents of the injured child to turn on me, the defender of the child.” But Media Matters did not brand autistic children as “brats”, “morons” and “idiots”. Michael Savage did. And if Savage wanted to make an argument based on his theory that “It is the falsely diagnosed, the misdiagnosed and the outright fakers who want the benefits, who must be found out and must be turned out so that the money can go to the truly needy in this particular field,” there were a thousand ways to launch that argument rather than to debase defenseless children. While with a little help of his friends, Savage continues to portray himself as the victim of a leftwing witch-hunt, there are also some Conservatives out in the field trying to call him into account. These Conservatives include groups, such as the National Autism Association (NAA), who join thousands of parents around the USA in demanding an apology and retraction from Savage and Vice President of the National Association of the Chiefs of Police and columnist, Jim Kouri. “This the kind of talk I’d expect from liberal-left talk show hosts such as Bill Maher, Al Franken, Randy Rhodes and others,” Kouri told Canada Free Press. “Savage’s statement feeds into the notion that conservatives are mean-spirited and hateful. We don’t need conservative spokespersons who perpetuate the myth of “Hate Radio”.” Meanwhile, if some of the autistic children branded as “brats” by Michael Savage could articulate how they feel about Michael Savage, it would come out in one word: “Bully!”
