Christian Nursery Worker in London sacked for expressing a Biblical opinion

Sarah Mbuyi had worked at Newpark Childcare in London since April last year. A lesbian woman began work at the four-facility Centre in September and the two women formed a working friendship with Mbuyi claiming the other was intensely interested in her Christian beliefs.
Mbuyi then gave her a Bible because of the other woman’s interest in Christian matters. This sparked a conversation that led to the woman saying she had been discriminated against by Christians before because of her sexual identity and expressed that she thought God condoned gay marriage. She expressed unhappiness about not being able to marry her female partner (even though the legality of gay marriage was only two months away). Mbuyi replied to her “if I tell you that God is OK with that I am lying to you”. She then continues her account telling Christian Concern “When I said no, God does not condone the practice of homosexuality, but does love you and says you should come to him as you are, she became emotional and went off to report me to my manager. I never ever condemned her, or accused her, but when she asked me directly what I believed, I was open about sharing the Bible’s teaching that homosexual sex (not the people) is wrong. It's clear that this offended her and she was determined to get me sacked, simply because I expressed traditional Christian beliefs." The woman immediately reported Mbuyi to her superiors and at a disciplinary hearing, according to the Daily Telegraph, the employers accused Miss Mbuyi of “harassing” her co-worker, saying such behaviour amounted to “gross misconduct”. Her employers then inquired how she would feel if she was asked to read children’s storybooks featuring same-sex parents. She replied that she would not be able to read such books. She was subsequently dismissed for the gross misconduct charge leaving the relevance of the latter question unclear.

Unsurprisingly the instigating co-worker cannot be reached for comment and the former employer is refusing to speak. This is not new in this field. British Christians have increasingly come under attack by homosexuals, baited to give their Biblically based viewpoint and then immediately accused of a hate crime or something similar. And it comes at a time when British Prime Minister David Cameron has proclaimed publicly that Britain is a Christian nation along with his cabinet cohort Eric Pickles, despite the fact their government has authored the most anti-Christian legislation and regulations in the nation’s history. Pickles department is already being sued by Christian Concern in another discrimination matter. Paul Diamond, an experienced attorney in religious discrimination cases, has been assigned by the Christian legal centre to represent Sarah Mbuyi and sue the centre. Meanwhile CLC’s chief executive Andrea Williams didn’t mince words:
“Sharing Biblical truths out of genuine love and concern for colleagues is being outlawed in the workplace by a dominating cultural correctness. There is a culture of fear which closes down freedom of speech and the manifestation of faith. This culture brands the liberating good news of the Gospel as oppressive and regressive. Sarah’s case demonstrates the confusion we’re experiencing in current times. David Cameron has given public recognition of the enormous positive impact that Jesus Christ has had on our nation but he wants to mould Christianity to his political agenda. History shows that Christianity is greater than any political agenda.”
Turning her sights on Cameron, Williams said: “David Cameron has ignored the concerns of the Christian community by driving through same-sex ‘marriage’. Any dissent in the public space, in the workplace, to the new prevailing orthodoxy means punishment as Sarah is experiencing. This is not a Government with a track record of recognising and respecting Christian faith. It has deliberately and consistently undermined Christians and their freedom to live out their faith in the public square. The Prime Minister has huge influence. If he is serious in his support for Christianity, he will intervene in Sarah’s case and ensure that those who believe in marriage, as defined in the bible, between one man and one woman, will not lose their jobs but be wholly and properly protected by the law. This government has seriously let down the Christian community. Easter statements of sentiment will not suffice. Consistent behaviour is what will be believed." Mbuyi told ITV news that her disciplinary hearing was unfair and one-sided, insisting she has no problems with homosexuality. The station’s reporter Ria Chatterjee asked her “so do you think it’s a sin” to which Mbuyi responded “yeah, homosexuality is sinful yea absolutely I believe it.” Chatterjee came right back with “so you can see why she would be offended by your comments.” Mbuye replied “yeah I can see, I can see definitely but shall I give her what she wants to hear or exactly what the Bible says.”

Christian’s must continue to stand up and be counted as an increasingly militant progressive government and society will seek to make them cower in silence or face consequences

Chatterjee went into the employment law aspect saying” there are strict employment laws in place with regards to discrimination, do you accept that your employers did what they had to do?” Now that’s a gotcha question for somebody suing! But Mbuyi is sharp and answered: “Honestly nope, why? Because I think that expressing a Biblical view and just keeping it at that just expressing it is not an abusive behavior. The employer clearly went too far but it seems that homosexuals are going to be protected from Christian speech a considerable amount. Christian’s must continue to stand up and be counted as an increasingly militant progressive government and society will seek to make them cower in silence or face consequences.
