...So she feels your pain

Hillary Clinton says she faced terrible economic hardships after leaving the White House

If you're out there, working your fingers to the bone, trying to get by, well, congratulations. You're just like Hillary Clinton. You see, the former First Lady understands what it's like to hit financial rock bottom. She knows how hard it can be. She's been there herself, and - just like you - she had to struggle to make ends meet.

All of this, she says, happened after she and her husband left the White House. They were floundering, frightened, destitute, and they had no idea how they'd be able to afford to purchase multiple homes. Oh sure, we've all been there. But here's Hillary to explain it.
Well, you have no reason to remember, but we came out of the White House not only dead broke but in debt. We had no money when we got there, and we struggled to piece together the resources for mortgages for houses, for Chelsea's education. You know, it was not easy. Bill has worked really hard and it's been amazing to me. He's worked very hard. First of all, we had to pay off all our debts. You know, you had to make double the money because of, obviously, taxes, and then pay off the debts and get us houses and take care of family members.
Yes, that's right. She said "houses." As in "more than one." Hillary outlined these dark, dark, years during an interview with Diane Sawyer.

So how did Hillary Clinton manage to get the mortgages for those houses? How did she dig herself out of debt? How - exactly - did this magnificent family manage to claw its way up from the muck and establish itself once again? The same way you would. Through hard work and dedication. Nah. Just kidding. They called on their friends. From the Washington Post:
When former White House chief of staff Erskine B. Bowles at the last minute balked at guaranteeing a $1.35 million mortgage for the Clintons' new house in Chappaqua, N.Y., McAuliffe rode to the president's rescue. In a move that enables the Clintons to buy the house – and Hillary Rodham Clinton to have a base for her New York Senate run – the 42-year-old real estate developer and dealmaker pledged to put up $1.35 million in cash to secure a mortgage for the Clintons. Otherwise, swamped by more than $5 million in legal debts, the Clintons might have had difficulty obtaining the loan for the five-bedroom, century-old house.
See? She's just like you! I think we all have someone who will write us a million dollar check when we incur a massive legal debt because our spouse committed perjury. Of course, like most of us, the Clintons had already been enjoying huge donations from the political and Hollywood elite. Their wealthy pals funneled millions into the Clinton Legal Defense Fund, which covered most of Bill's scandal-induced debts.
The trustees of President Clinton's legal defense fund said yesterday that they have raised more than $4.5 million to help pay his legal bills and may eventually be able to cover most of the cost of the president's legal defense in the Whitewater investigation, the Paula Jones sexual harassment lawsuit and Congress's impeachment inquiry and trial.
Yes, Hillary truly is an "everywoman." Why, in just four short years, she managed to eliminate $10 million in red ink! Certainly, you could do the same because, like her, you've taken home $5 million in speaking fees while your husband generated another $100 million. There's also $2.8 million in book deals, $16 million in post-presidential pensions, and on and on and on.... Y'know, stuff we all have. The Washington Post broke down Hillary's ridiculous whining in one simple chart: Hillary Clinton says she faced terrible economic hardships after leaving the White House So remember, folks. Next time you're inclined to think that the Clintons are just a couple of wealthy fat cats, you should take a moment to realize that they're not so different from the rest of us. They have multiple homes, millions upon millions of dollars, and a veritable army of wealthy friends who are eager to write them great big checks. They're pretty much your average Norman Rockwell family. Oh, and the fact that Hillary is complaining about taxes.... How great is that?
