More than 15 million UK households plan to ration their energy use this winter to cope with “sky-high” energy costs, according to uSwitch. The price comparison website, which surveyed 5,300 people, found that almost six in ten (57%) people have already cut back or plan to ration their energy use this winter in a bid to reduce bills. The research also revealed that more than a third of people (36%) who rationed their energy last winter said it affected their health and wellbeing. --Ian Silvera, International Business Times, 6 November 2014
As many as 69 per cent of UK households are worried about the cost of using extra energy this winter, with many bill payers claiming they would spend less money on food in order to pay for energy bills, the survey found. Around 45 per cent said they would struggle to pay their energy bills if they went up, while one in six says they're already struggling to make ends meet, despite the recent warm weather. A third are claiming they would spend less on food to make ends meet. --Natalie Wain, This is Money, 6 November 2014 In this day and age it’s shocking to see so many being forced to go without heating and risk their health, simply to cope with high energy bills. Wholesale energy prices have been falling for a long time now and it’s high time for the big six suppliers to pass on these reductions to hard-pressed consumers, who will be going cold because they simply can’t afford to keep the heating on. --Ann Robinson, uSwitch. International Business Times, 6 November 2014

Green levies on energy bills will more than double by 2020 and treble by 2030, new government analysis shows. Every household now pays £68 a year to subsidise renewable energy projects such as wind farms, solar panels and biomass plants and to fund carbon taxes, according to official analysis published on Thursday. But that sum is forecast to rise significantly in order to fund more wind farms and new nuclear plants, rising carbon taxes and a new scheme to ensure there are enough back-up power plants when the wind doesn’t blow. --Emily Gosden, The Daily Telegraph, 7 November 2014 The green crusade of successive governments is set to double electricity bills for households and cost homes £26billion a year by 2030, it was claimed yesterday. The cost of renewable energy and carbon taxes will put an extra £983 a year on household bills by then, compared to relying on a mix of nuclear and new gas-fired power stations, three experts told a Lords committee. Last night Dr Benny Peiser of the Global Warming Policy Forum said: “The irony is that energy prices around the world are falling, particularly for oil and gas. But households are not profiting because Government policies are making energy more expensive.” –John Ingham, Daily Express, 15 October 2014 A survey by a partnership of leading businesses and charities has found that energy bills are the top financial concern for people in Britain, a report published today has revealed. The campaign group has found that in a YouGov poll of around 2,000 adults 32% of people are most worried about energy bills. --Laurna Robertson, Inside Housing 23 October 2014 For a growing number of Europeans, their continent's global warming policies have forced them to decide whether to heat their homes or buy food. In short they must choose whether to "Heat or Eat," which was the title of a talk by Benny Peiser, director of the Global Warming Policy Foundation. Greek citizens are chopping down their forests in search of wood and British pensioners are buying cheap old hardcover books as uel to heat their homes since coal is more expensive. The Telegraph newspaper reported that half a million pensioners spent Christmas in bed in an effort to keep warm. --Licia Corbella, Calgary Herald 15 May 2013 BBC: Why Are There So Many Climate Sceptics?
