"Three policemen had arrived on bikes but had to leave because the men were armed, obviously," Benoit Bringer, who works on the same floor as Charlie Hebdo's offices, told France Info radio, according to The Guardian. "Then the attackers took off in a car." CBS News also reported — citing a reporter with Britain's Telegraph newspaper — that the two officers were apparently unarmed. Paris police officers have the option of carrying firearms, though many choose not to.
The interesting thing here, is we talked about guns the last time in regarding the United States, regarding how guns get in the hands of the kind of people that kill the two police officers here two weeks ago. France has tremendous gun control laws, and yet these people are able to get Kalashnikovs. So, this is really complicated stuff, and I think you have to treat these people as basically mass murderers. As we mentioned this morning, Dean prefers to call them "mass murderers" because he can't bring himself to label them "Muslim terrorists." That aside, Dean is coming dangerously close to acknowledging a truth that the right has been shouting for decades. We're sure the left will never admit it, but the fact is that gun bans simply don't work. Despite the fact that liberals are eager to point out that "criminalizing drugs hasn't stopped the spread of drugs," they somehow feel that banning guns will stop gun violence. In reality, Europe's campaign to demonize and eliminate firearms has only neutered the populace, made private citizens vulnerable to attack, and created an irrational disdain for guns - even in the police.
