'Treason' in the eye of the beholder

No, libs, the GOP letter to Iran isn't traitorous - but these other things? Maybe...

As we explained this morning, the liberal intelligentsia is losing its collective mind over a letter penned by 47 GOP senators. In it, they remind Iran - as well as our rogue President - that the U.S. Constitution exists, separation of powers exists, and that Obama's effort to grant Iran a pathway to a nuclear arsenal doesn't hold much water if Congress isn't on board. In short, they explain the workings of the United States government in language that even Democrats (or a rogue terrorist state) can understand.

As a result, they're being accused of treason. Actually, "accused" may not be the right word. High-minded media outlets are avoiding actual accusation by simply asking the not-at-all-incendiary question: Did 47 Senators (including Rand Paul and Ted Cruz) just commit treason? Golly. I wonder what they think! Here's Bloomberg's headline: ...And here's the front page of the New York Daily News: The simple answer is "no." Explaining - factually - how our system of checks and balances works is not "treason." You'd think that would be obvious but, apparently, it's not. As Article II, Section 2, of the Constitution says, the President: "shall have power, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, to make treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur." This is basic knowledge folks. Anyone who managed to squeak through high school knows this. The odds are, if you're reading this page, someone taught it to you when you were young. On the other hand; if what these Senators published is to be considered treason, then congratulations Dems! You've just labeled every 9th grade civics teach in America a "traitor." But, hey. Maybe Dems aren't using the words "traitor” and "treason" in a specific sense. Maybe, as Barack Obama is wont to do, they're "speaking colloquially." Perhaps they're simply suggesting that these Senators, who understand what an idiotic deal this really is, are operating in opposition of the President - and libs think this feels like treason. Well, if that's the case, ask yourself this: What "feels" more treasonous: A letter explaining the separation of powers, or proffering a plan that - in ten years' time - grants nuclear weapons to a terrorist state which views the United States as "the great Satan?" What "feels" more treasonous: A letter explaining the separation of powers, or a bargain that grants nukes to a country which has sworn to commit genocide and wipe one of our ally nations off the face of the Earth? What "feels" more treasonous: A letter explaining the separation of powers, or a President who rules via executive order, often in direct violation of both the Constitution and court orders? What "feels" more treasonous? A letter explaining the separation of powers, or an administration which uses the power of the IRS to undermine the 1st Amendment and attack U.S citizens with whom they disagree? Heck, I could make a compelling argument that forcing Americans to purchase a product from a private corporation - under threat of financial penalty or prosecution - "feels" far more treasonous than what these 47 Senators did. So, next time you hear about these evil Republicans and their traitorous ways, ask yourself: What makes a person a traitor? Acknowledging the Constitution, or bargaining with those who would destroy it?
