Yes, Hillary lies with a frequency that probably pushes her well into “pathological” territory. And yes, she flouts the rules, regulations, and laws that are supposed to define and corral our government. Those are good reasons not to let her be President, but they aren’t the only ones. Since she’s constantly mired in headline-grabbing scandals, it can be easy to forget that Mrs. Clinton would make a terrible leader in terms of policy as well.

Americans for Tax Reform wants to make sure you remember just how awful her actual positions are, so they’ve issued a reminder about her failed 1993 pursuit of gun control. Specifically, she was a big champion of a special 25% national sales tax that she hope would curb legal gun ownership. It would be coupled with a $2500.00 license for firearms dealers. These, she claimed, would somehow lead to less violence. From ATR:

As she testified before the tax-writing Senate Finance Committee on Sept. 30, 1993, Hillary Clinton was asked by Sen. Bill Bradley (D-N.J.) if she supported the imposition of a new, 25 percent national sales tax on guns. Clinton emphatically endorsed the tax, stating: "I am all for that." As reported by the Associated Press on Oct. 1, 1993: Sen. Bill Bradley, D-N.J., picked up Mrs. Clinton's support for his idea of slapping stiff taxes on ''purveyors of violence:'' a 25 percent sales tax on guns and $2,500 license fees for gun dealers. ''Speaking personally ... I'm all for that,'' said the first lady. But she stressed she was just speaking for herself. ''Well, let me say that there is no more important personal endorsement in the country today, and I thank you very much,'' said a pleased-as-punch Bradley. After she publically endorsed the 25 percent gun tax in congressional testimony, she made sure that everyone understood how important this was to her, saying: "I am speaking personally, but I feel very strongly about that."

There are a lot of reasons that this is nonsense, but the most obvious one is that taxing a right flies directly in the face of what rights are. This is just another example of how little regard progressives have for anything that doesn't support their agenda. Rights are worthless unless they're the rights they like. Don't believe it? Imagine how they'd howl if someone tried to tax the 1st Amendment to silence their constant whining. Moreover, the tax idea won't work, since the vast majority of crimes involving firearms are committed with illegally obtained guns. A guy selling midnight specials from the trunk of his rusted-out Impala isn't particularly interested in getting a license and you can bet he's not going to concern himself with sales tax either. Illegal firearms will still be readily obtainable. As always with left-wing gun control ploys, the sales tax scheme only targets people who can purchase legally. Their goal isn't to limit crime or violence - it's to limit the rights of every law-abiding American.
