I’m not making this up.
Donald Trump’s Muslim Proposal inflamed so much passion among Liberals they unconsciously revealed themselves to be the wild-eyed, emotional, illogical sorts we always knew them to be. The hysteria was so widespread, however, it begged further investigation into the eons-old question: Where do Liberals come from?
At last, we have an answer: The Liberal Gene.
Admit it, Liberals infuriate Conservatives because Liberals think emotionally rather than logically. Consequently, when you point out a Liberal’s illogic, they become emotional rather than logically considering the allegation. This makes it impossible to argue affectively with a liberal. The unspoken message conveyed to the Liberal, the inescapable message is, upon any topic, “Why are you so ignorant?”
This insulting ignorance message is unavoidable, since were a Liberal to consider political stances logically, he or she would immediately find all their desired ends (national security, care for the poor, children, and the environment) would best be achieved via Conservative means. And, once this dawned upon them, they would have to admit what a fool they’d been all along to think so irrationally up to that point. Of course, no one is easily persuaded to acknowledge they’ve been a fool. So, the Liberal v Conservative warfare continues.
Liberals think Conservatives are monopoly top-hat people, selfish, unimaginative, uncaring. Conservatives think Liberals are like impetuous school children, all too ready to let their emotions rule their cognitions. Yet…each class has multiple friends within the other. Our severe caricatures of each other never seem borne out, however, in our friends. Instead, Liberals and Conservatives alike tell themselves their friends of the other persuasion are truly nice people, not really of the offending ilk. So, too, for family members.
For example, my wife of 16 years was born into a staunch Catholic, staunch Democrat, and staunch Liberal Midwestern family. For 16 years she has suffered my harangues of outrageous fortune as well as my calm review of the logic of Conservatism, the means by which it fulfills all Liberal dreams (not counting the totalitarian parts). She is a brilliant woman. Yet… her default position is Liberal. Even though she agrees with me (genuinely) when we discuss politics, her agreement, her vision, is never transformed. She always defaults to the Liberal perspective. And this remains the case even now, even though she can still do Calculus.
And that’s the problem we’ve all had I believe – our lifelong frustration with people, Liberals, who just don’t seem to understand, of always having to ask them, “How in the hell can you think like that?”
It’s always felt as if there were a genetic basis to it, as if some aspect of Liberalism were biological.
It is. Liberals have different genetics and brain structure. They can’t help being Liberal. Their brains influence their vision so powerfully they most often cannot break free.
Since 2010, numerous well-controlled studies increasingly support a genetic and anatomic basis for Liberalism v Conservatism. (For particulars, Google the PubMed website (National Library of Medicine) and enter one or more names of the following researchers in the search field: Hatemi PK, Fowler JH, Kandler C, Benjamin DJ, Kanai, Schreiber D – and then link to all the other research you hit upon).
In particular, Liberals are found to have more of a particular variant (R7) of the DRD4 gene which codes for the dopamine receptor in brain cell membranes. When this genetic predisposition is combined with particular environmental variables (friends, childhood, etc.), it is possible to more accurately predict whether someone will be “Liberal” than when merely environmental variables alone are measured.
Increasing research also demonstrates Liberalism is associated with particular changes in brain anatomy when compared with Conservatism. Specifically, Liberalism is associated with increased grey matter in the anterior cingulate cortex of the brain. Conservatives tend to have more grey matter in the right amygdala in the brain.
Notice I’m very carefully avoiding the issue of which genetic types and brain anatomy particulars are better.
The significant issue is that now we can finally understand why our Liberal friends are so infuriating, why they never seem to really get it: They are thinking with different brains than we are. Consequently, logical discourse is almost entirely lost upon them: We can’t change their brains – we can’t change their minds.
The take-home message: We should focus upon having a good time with our Liberal friends – not upon changing them. Instead, we need to focus our rhetorical efforts upon educating people whose brains have the capacity to think Conservatively: The large swath of the Conservative Gene population yet unaware of how refreshing doses of logic and common sense can be.
