The House Ethics Committee said Thursday morning that it has begun an investigation into allegations that Nunes may have made "unauthorized disclosures of classified information," in possible violation of House rules. The Ethics Committee said that the mere fact that they were investigating the allegations did not in itself indicate any violation had occurred. Nunes said in a statement that he believed it was in the "best interests" of the Intel committee and Congress for him to temporarily step aside. "Several leftwing activist groups have filed accusations against me with the Office of Congressional Ethics," Nunes said in the statement. "The charges are entirely false and politically motivated, and are being leveled just as the American people are beginning to learn the truth about the improper unmasking of the identities of U.S. citizens and other abuses of power."
Still, he added that despite the "baseless of these charges" he would be stepping aside, and Representative Mike Conaway, along assistance from Representatives Trey Gowdy and Tom Rooney, would temporarily take charge of the investigation. As long as Gowdy is one of the leaders of the investigation, Democrats can't breathe a sigh of relief and they know it. And if the Ethics Committee clears Nunes and he re-takes the chair, it will be harder at that point for the media/left to pretend the whole investigation is tainted by his involvement. They'll try, of course. To them, once a Republican has been investigated, the Republican is presumed guilty always and forever. Even a definitive finding vindicating him will simply be dismissed as partisanship - sort of like the actual partisanship that is now trying to pretend Susan Rice didn't do anything wrong. But that's the problem with this whole thing. There is almost certainly nothing to this "Trump collaborated with the Russians" nonsense, and the Democrats know it. They've used it to successfully create a media narrative, but it's not going to stand up in a real investigation. So they have to cast doubt on the investigation too by pretending the chairman of the commitee is tainted. That way, when the final report says there was nothing to this from the get-go, they can claim there really was but that Trump was just being protected by Republicans in the House.
