House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was shot in the hip and multiple Congressional aides were hit by a gunman with a rifle who opened fire at a baseball practice in Virginia Wednesday morning, Fox News confirmed. At least one aide was shot in the chest.
The gunman was shot by U.S. Capital Police, apprehended and taken to the hospital. Sen. Mike Lee told Fox News, however, the gunman was dead. Rep. Mo Brooks reportedly used a belt as a tourniquet to stop Scalise's bleeding. No word on the identity of the shooter yet, or any motive. Rob says Rand Paul made an interesting observation on MSNBC: The presence of Scalise, a member of the House leadership, meant Capitol Police were present. That probably saved a lot of people's lives, and apparently doomed that of the shooter. We'll have more as we get it. UPDATE (Dan): Congressman Roger Williams was also shot. No word on his condition. UPDATE (Dan): Alabama.com reports that as many as 50 shots were fired, although it doesn't specify if they were all from the shooter or if some were from the police. They also say two cops were shot in addition to the two congressmen and their aides.
George Washington University Hospital confirms they have received two individuals. Both are currently in critical condition.
