Survival in Tough Times: Get ahead of them by consulting the barometer and the old weather vane. You don’t have to tell them you looked at the latest maps and radar.

Big Ol’ Comma

Growing up the first few years next to the grandparents’ farm in Henry County, Indiana, it was the most natural thing in the world to pay attention to the weather. I remember days with puffy cumulus clouds and chilly breezes after a storm. There was a spell of several days of rain one spring before I started school. There was a memorable blizzard in ’61 during the basketball tournament.

For 25 years in Portland OR (back in the good days) you didn't really need to check the weather. It was automatically going to be rain and more rain. During the beautiful summers, the temps on the TV didn't matter. You just knew it wasn't raining and it would be beautiful no matter what! When we retired and moved to the mountains we did watch the weather stations daily, but mostly we listened to the hunters telling us the elk had moved down early. We are now in the heartland and we pay attention to whatever the farmers say, and the hunters. Most of the farmers are hunters, so they have a lot of reliable news. I trust them a lot more than I do the TV. Sometimes the weather forecasters are right on, and other times they are right wrong. Just sayin'. Paying attention to the farmers.
We do check the TV every day for the temps. In North Dakota it is just cold - guaranteed. We are retired and stay cozy in our home. Not really anything we will be doing outside until spring comes. Handy to know if ice or snow expected in case you have doctors' appts. or errands. Other than that, there are 2 seasons - hot/muggy or cold/freeze your ears off. We find the music on the weather channel to be enjoyable. Sometimes we catch ourselves just sitting and enjoying the peaceful Muzak. We watch the weather around the country just for something to do and out of curiosity, but mostly we trust the farmers.
