The representatives of the Second Continental Congress were divided over many issues and spent an inordinate amount of time feuding, but they knew their colonies must unite to prevent the establishment of absolute tyranny over them. They had the common sense to heed Benjamin Franklin's warning, "We must, indeed, all hang together or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately."
