Alliance restored

You know who seems really happy right about now? Benjamin Netanyahu

Wouldn't you be? For eight years you've had to deal with a guy who clearly sees you as more of an annoyance than as a valuable ally - and who goes and makes insane deals with the country that poses the greatest threat to you, all while ignoring your plaintive objections.
For all the media's yammering today about how world leaders are skittish and terrified, this guy looks about as happy as he's been since the day W got on that plane for Dallas. Finally, once again, there is hope for the U.S./Israel alliance to be what it should be: One thing I'd pray where Trump is concerned is that he not follow the lead of other presidents on a myopic quest for some sort of Middle East peace breakthrough that serves as his legacy or whatever. Jimmy Carter thought he had that in 1979 with the Camp David accords. Bill Clinton thought he had it in 1993 at Oslo. Nope. Israel's neighbors don't attack for lack of an American president to get them to put their signatures on a deal. There's been plenty of that. They attack because they hate Israel and they want it destroyed. What Israel needs out of the United States is an ally that understands that, and recognizes the highest and best result we can get is an Israel secure from attack because we've got their backs. They also need a United States that doesn't give credence to the B.S. complaints lodged against it at the United Nations. Obama wanted nothing more than to be loved by the "global community" that convenes at Turtle Bay. If Trump is what he presents himself to be, he's not looking for a fight with the UN, but neither is he willing to sell out America's interests or those of an important ally in order to win their praise. Either way, it appears to be a pretty happy day in Tel Aviv. Good news. Like those of us over here, the Israelis have been through enough.
